  • Fishing vs Mining

I'm still really questiong about which is more profitable. I've seen really rich fishing guys, and I've seen really rich mining guys too.

Also, what level would you need to safely mine at Ifrit's Cauldron without being aggroed?

And lastly, I've heard that mining is a hidden skill, so does it mean also the more you mine, the better the mining results would be?

Level 8 billion. There is no safe level to mine in Ifrit's Cauldron, you'll get aggro up to Lv. 75.

At a really high fishing skill in the right spots with Lu Shang's, I'd have to say that fishing is more profitable. Mining, however, doesn't have anywhere near the startup time investment, and if you mine in Ifrit's it's good money. Course, Ifrit's is notorious for killing you. Well, for killing me, anyway.

I got about 150k today by mining. Id pick mining over fishing since its more fun.

I'd challenge the notion that mining is necessarily more profitable than fishing.

Mining has no skill, and with the field gear, will generate fairly consistent income, but will never increase.

Generally speaking, depending on your server economy, mining at different places will get you different amounts of profit, assuming you know where to go, how to move around, and where to find the mining points.

                Under optimal conditions:

Zeruhn Mines - 5-10K net per hour
Yughott Grotto - 10-15K net per hour
Gusgen Mines - 10-30K net per hour
Ifrit's Cauldron - hard to say. Average is 5-10K net per hour, with the very rare random chance of Adaman Ore or Orichalcum providing an instant 70+K.

The above numbers are assuming you have very little competition from other miners. Under heavily congested mining conditions, these numbers can fall well below 5K per hour.

                ---

Fishing skill, on the other hand, takes a very long time to develop, but income builds as you gain skill (the more skill you have, the more money you can make over time). Assuming you are fishing for money and not exclusively for skill, this is what you'd probably make fishing for the right things at each level:

Fishing level : Profit per hour
0-10: Very low profit, perhaps 2-4K per hour.
11-20: Low profit, 5-8K per hour
21-30: Decent profit, 6-12K per hour
31-40: Good profit, 10-16K per hour
41-50: Very good profit, 12-24K per hour

I just hit level 50 in Fishing so can not comment on how profitable it is at higher levels, but my acquaintances tell me they make at least 20-30K per hour consistently at level 90-100 fishing, more if they are fishing specifically for money(occasional reports of over 50-75K per hour net).

If you counted all the hours it takes to get to level 70+ fishing to be able to easily catch nebs and the other high profit fish, and add in the time it takes to get lu shangs...then you mined for that long, you'd probably have a LOT more money from mining... Since leveling fishing is usually not very profitable, since you are catching less profitible fish that give you skillups.

Xccoortri: True. Very true. You'll be behind in fishing after getting that far for about X hours of farming, then you'll pull ahead, and then mining will be SOOOO far away back there that it's a tiny dot.

Mining is for quick profit needed, time invested in fishing is a long time investment. If you're playing the game for a year or more, and fish 1 hour per day, it'll pay off. If you're not playing a lot, mining will be more profitable.

i totally disagree.... i found a way fishing to make 30-40k an hour all day long with only short breaks running back to town to sell to npc. i think fishing is by far more profitible then mining is. you lose mining buying picks while my rod lasts virtually forever... also i dont have to compete with other for my spots. made 230k in only 6 hours one day this weekend. you also dont have to be a high lvl either. just have to know what to fish for.

                      my lvls are 27 cooking/ 24 fishing/ 28 smithing

Fishing: Take long time to level the skill, so you can catch good fishes easily without losing catch/break rod. But when you are high level fisher, fishing does earn you good money. If you have other craft skills to support it, the better. For example: insect balls are cheap to make, and moat carps worth money.

Mining: Does not require skill up, but it isn't as easy as go in-mine-150k. I once broke 5 pickaxes before getting anything, when I had fieldgears on.

Though, Mining is easier to earn money than fishing, due to the time saved from skilling up. But I prefer fishing, it's better fun, and the fishing tunica set is cheaper to buy.

Gusgen mines need about 45 in main, I guess. That's when I started going to Gusgen; never liked the scenary there. I remember things deep in still aggro me at 40 when I did my AF1.
Pal mines should be 100% safe for a lv30.

Never tried raising fishing, I have however mined alot, once I made 143k gil worth of ores with mining in Gusgen within a little less then 2 hours.

Mining is random, and you want to mine with not too many and not too little of players.

every fisherman knows there are more things to catch then just fish to make money that require less fishing skill if your other crafting skills are higher. not giving away any more secrets.

Yeah, for those of you that think a stack of Moat Carp @ 4K or a stack of low-bite-rate Nebs @ 14K is all there is to fishing, you're missing the boat (not the literal boat from Selbina to Mhaura) -- I mean the boat full of money, sailing with a sail made of money, in an ocean of money (a la Scrooge McDuck) where you can sit and be fed money by robots while you stick money in your ears.
