You can still find plenty of mentor idiots incapable of actually helping you with quality advice. i.e Example mentors: building a 5 mage 1 fighter pt (SMN,WHM,RDM,BLM,BRD,WAR(Taru) at the levels in Valkrum and still arguing "We need a BRD, what we need is a BRD, a BRD will make this alright, don't worry trying to find a BRD", hmmm...SMN,WHM,RDM,BLM,BRD,WAR, totally needs another BRD. The status itself encourages too much homosexuality.

Anyway, I suggest a Mentor Test.

Shouldn't be too hard to come up with some difficult,
yet not wholly cryptic topics in the game to challenge would-be Mentors.
I'd give up my Mentor status right now just to be given the opportunity to earn it.

Hell, maybe we can even have increasingly difficult tests to earn higher lvls of Mentor?

Thank god someone's brought this up.

If were to look at my current level and rank, you would think I'm a newbie. Truth of the matter is, I've been playing since early January (not THAT long of a time, but enough to know half the ends and outs, but I'm no where arrogant enough to say I'm an expert on this game). The reason for the lack of higher levels and Rank 2 is simply the fact that I do most of my exp and missions with my girlfriend; she's a bit slow not because she doesn't know what she's doing, but because she doesn't get nearly as much playtime as most players (she shares a computer/FFXI with her brother, who's on Pandy. We're on Seraph). So, yes, I'm probably months late even getting my frickin' chocobo, but at least I've learned all/most of what most people I've partied with should have already learned before even getting to Rank 5. (That and I'll probably never have money problems for a LONG LONG time, given the amount of time I have free to farm/mine/synth/fish; know of any other rank 2 peeps with four active jobs with almost the best equipment possible for each, and STILL has 100k to boot? Yeah, probably so, but not many.)

With that said, a LOT of the people we've partied with in the past have already managed to run laps around us. And now some of these people are mentoring. And call me a bitter jerk or a snobbish asshole, but, I can honestly say a lot of these people SHOULD NOT BE MENTORING; they meet NO qualifications to patiently guide newer players, and most of them have no sense of honesty or even common human decency. Hell, half of these idiots _I_ was giving advice to while in party, some of them even earning a nice cushy position on my Blist/Do Not Party With List. I have to question if Lvl 30/Rank 3 is even a high enough standard to even give out the Mentor flag, as anyone with the time can easily get to that rank in a matter of a month or two, if even that long a time. Even I'm not sure I'd feel right giving people advice at that low a rank.

So yes Squeenix, Required Test, PLEASE.

And speaking as a lowbie-level, if I need a mentor's advice, the last person I'm going to ask is a Rank 5 or lower player, because those players are usually the casual player that will quit once they hit Genkai 1 and cry because it's taken them so long for a paper drop.

Sorry to stereotype, and I won't blame anyone for stereotyping me for having the testicular fortitude for saying what I just said, but I won't take it back either.
