  • EU Version of Devil Survivor Overclocked Plagued with Game Breaking Bugs

Picked up Devil Survivor Overclocked today since it finally came out in the EU on Friday...What the fuck happened?

Basically any time you use the Summon Command or try to use the Auction House to hire more demons the game crashes without fail.

Please remember that BOTH OF THESE ARE MAJOR GAMPLAY MECHANICS THAT RENDERS THE GAME UNPLAYABLE

So basically it is impossible to complete a battle without using Demons of the game WILL crash and force you into a hard reset. The game also crashes if at an Auction, a Demon is lying about its stats which is another major point of the game since you never truly know if a Demon is being truthful with you until you have actually paid for its services.

We waited 4 years and had to pay $60 for this buggy piece of shit. Are Atlus trying to ruin their reputation with Europe?

Quick Google search for sources to confirm:

News: Devil Survivor Overclocked is Undercooked in Europe, Suffers Game Breaking Bugs Page 1 - Cubed3
European Release of Devil Survivor Overclocked Marred By Game-Breaking Bugs - 3DS News @ Nintendo Life
European release of Devil Survivor: Overclocked causing various issues | Nintendo Everything
European gamers playing Devil Survivor: Overclocked report game breaking bugs, other issues | N4G

EDIT: Another fun "Feature" bug I found. The game uses Japanese style "Surname First" naming conventions but tells you it uses Western style naming conventions. So Basically the Protagonist gets called by his surname for the entire game because it asks you to give his First name first...

Given a number of these issues were addressed for the US version, with the exception of a small localization glitch (but we're talking like a sentence of unlocalized text, not your issue), it seems like a fuck-up between Atlus Japan and Zen United. I just assumed they localized from the US version to whatever additional subs were needed but it sounds like the JP version with a few extra problems.

Or EU "fans" are just looking for something, anything to fuel their tiresome region lock rage, which is just as plausible.

Whatever the case, 3DS games can be patched by way of Spotpass so NoE, Zen United and Atlus Japan are the guys to ask.

It was Ghostlight that published it (not sure on who handled localisation but it may have been them too), but it's on Atlus to give them the EU build of the game. I'm actually not sure if it IS on Ghostlight as this is implying that Ghostlight has a team of game programmers ready that have knowledge on how the game is made, how it works, how to change things without breaking it and are handling the text insertion and other changes while ensuring that nothing else breaks.

At the moment, playing the game is a struggle. The workaround for the Auction bug is to always save before an auction (to be fair you're an idiot if you don't do that anyway). The Summon bug is quite damaging though since before you get revival spells, you basically can't let anyone die. If you try to use the Summon command to call in reinforcements the game crashes and you get the "The game has run into an error and has shut down" message on the 3DS Home Screen. I have no idea of how you work around that other than reloading if you lose anyone if you think that that loss will cause you to lose the encounter.

Ghostlight have posted a message on their blog about them trying to get a patch sorted out but given the Region Lock clusterfuck and now DeSu Overclocked being essentially unplayable (and unwinnable without hacking a ROM of the game) after a four year wait to get a version of DeSu in the EU, I'm wondering what the hell Atlus could actually do to save their reputation in Europe (Zen United and Ghostlight already had a terrible reputation here even before Atlus had anything to do with them).

I honestly wished that this was a bad April Fool's joke and Atlus/Ghostlight would pull out a patch today but there are a lot of people that really anticipated this for the 3DS and are quite understandably annoyed. It used to be a running joke that highly delayed releases (P3 FES and P4 were out in Japan before we got P3 for example) were down to Atlus screwing over Europe so they don't have to release games over here and not because they didn't have any EU base. But with how they have acted over the last couple of years that joke has turned into this: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph...AneurysmMoment

That said, the EU fanbase have a new joke that the crashes are not bugs but a new EU Exclusive "European Extreme" difficulty mode.
