Yeah, not regretting passing on Dragon's Dogma at all. People still hop up and down saying its "optional" but then I have games of that type with hundreds of hours of content by default that I could just play instead. Capcom took the worst of Bioware and Bethesda's most hated DLC shenanigans and tried to do them again.

Meanwhile Skyrim and Dark Souls get proper expansions several months to a year after release. I think I like that approach better.

Have you seen the sheer ridiculousness of NISA's DLCs? It's completely off the charts, especially with J9 games, although I don't doubt they are making money off those mews. I gave up trying to "browse" those DLCs ... you could probably make 2 or 3 new games with all of those contents.

Eh, NIS is in a different sandbox altogether when it comes to DLC, though. None of their DLC feels "essential"; a lot of it is just vanity and fanservice, and for that I think it's fine. If you're not an uberfan, it's not going to convince you to buy it (I certainly don't), but you never feel compelled to buy it.

The difference with Capcom is that their recent DLC offerings really do tend to be materially "necessary", as in the game feels somewhat incomplete without them. Street Fighter X Tekken gets a pass from me because the existing roster is already huge, but Dragon's Dogma is scary - new DLC missions every week since release so far (scheduled for 10 weeks, plus other DLC on offer).

How is this materially different than what Call of Duty / Activision are doing?

Granted, Capcom's DLC greed exceeds everyone else's to the Nth degree lately, but let's keep things in perspective here.

Not every publisher is guilty of this, just to be fair. Some are being surprisingly good about it like 343i (and to a lesser degree DICE; Battlefield Premium is worth every penny and even if you bought Karkand already you're STILL saving money if you plan to get all the DLC anyway). I think we can all agree however that Capcom and WB are the worst offenders.

I thing charging for color palate swaps is pretty dirty. Costumes are one thing, but charging for palates is stupid.

To be fair, we should separate "cosmetic" DLCs from "gameplay enhancing/changing" DLCs. It's one thing if a company offers 400 DLC items for a game when all it does is give you costumes, which doesn't change the gameplay, and an entirely different matter when a game has "additional story" for $9 each chapter when they should've been included in the original release.

What you're really saying is its ok when it's developers you like. It's bad when Activision does it unless its Blizzard, it's OK when EA does it so long as its DICE.

Dunno why you're ready to string up WB, they've only had two games as offenders. EA and Capcom have a catalogue of offenders. Scribblenauts and Lollipop Chainsaw don't have copious amounts of DLC.

The version of SFXT that comes with it happens to be with all the disk-locked characters unlocked, proving yet again buying most games from big publishers at $60 new these days is for suckers.

Amazon.com: Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collector's Set: Video Games

I don't like SF enough to spend $150, although the set IS nice and there's 4 games in the bundle, so the value is there. Unless you already own those titles (and the 11 CD music collection) I have a friend whose an SF geek and will be one of the first to place their pre-orders.
