Kinda late to announce it, but oh well. It's $25, grab it if you haven't for whatever reason.

I would ask for an actual reason, but science just confirmed you don't have a soul, so further data is not needed.Originally posted by Malacite View PostNot worth buying.
Portal 2 is easily the best game released so far this year and certainly a GOTY contender. $25 for it right now is a hell of a bargain.Last edited by Omgwtfbbqkitten; 07-09-2011, 06:32 PM.

Re: Portal 2 50% off until tomorrow
I defy that notion, I've seen a different side to the story of the game in my second playthrough. There are just little things you couldn't catch the first time around because you wanted to move about to the next funny line or puzzle. They were things that were there, but you didn't really see the significance of the first time. Or you just plain walked past them and didn't notice.Originally posted by Malacite View PostI rented Portal 2, and I enjoyed it quite a bit.
But there's just zero replay value to it, and that's why I wouldn't buy it.
I could say what those things are and what they mean, but hey, it would require someone with an attention span greater than a gnat's to appreciate. Maybe you just like your stories spoonfed to you rather than appreciate the unique narrative experience only a video game can bring.
Also co-op. If you got through all those co-op missions on a rental, you're full of it.

Played through thrice, myself, and then again with the wife. Still haven't touched the co-op levels. Just never hooked up with anyone to do them.

Re: Portal 2 50% off until tomorrow
There's also the developer's commentary mode, where you kinda play through the chapters and hear and actually see what Valve did to make the game like they did. Its sort of frustrating it doesn't keep the checkpoints of the main campaign when you fail parts, though.Originally posted by Taskmage View PostPlayed through thrice, myself, and then again with the wife. Re: Portal 2 50% off until tomorrow
Developer commentary was my second playthrough, mopping up achievements was my third. I found the developer commentary much more interesting in the original when there was more said about unexpected design challenges and player behavior. The nodes in the sequel sounded more like what an artist would say if asked to describe his work in a gallery: "I was going for a certain impression so I chose this and that color scheme to reflect .." whatever. To be expected that the second game would be less of a learning experience for the devs, but that's the part I most wanted to hear about.

Re: Portal 2 50% off until tomorrow
Unfortunately at the time none of my friends had the game, the ones that do have it all picked it up like the day after I returned it so I played a couple of rounds with a random guy.Originally posted by Omgwtfbbqkitten View PostAlso co-op. Again, it was fun, but once you've solved the puzzles that's it - there's nothing left. Sorry but I'm siding with Shane Satterfield on this one, it's a great game but there's just no replay value whatsoever so I personally view it as a great rental game but a sub-par buy. I'm not criticizing the quality of the game, it's top-notch - It just doesn't have any lasting appeal to me.

Again, BBQ and Taskmage addressed this point.Again, it was fun, but once you've solved the puzzles that's it - there's nothing left.
Besides, all games have replay value. If you don't want to touch it again that's one thing, but there's always speed runs and challenge runs. Y'know, like in the old days.

Re: Portal 2 50% off until tomorrow
It's Portal 2. The first didn't have much replay value, either, but it was a must-buy. Portal 2 is in exactly the same boat.
Besides, I don't want to rent a game and be forced through it five days or return it without completing it. It's nice to own the game, play it at my own pace, and take time to smell the roses.
