Backward compatible
Controller with a touch screen.

Sony and Nintendo know Apple is only going to be come more and more of a force in the industry, they're going to show us how they'll compete with NGP, 3DS and their consoles and in hopes it will get the casual iOS market interested in something a bit more sophisticated as games go. They can't beat iOS games on price, but they can show people why their games cost more and why they're worth that investment.
Hell, Steve Jobs rigged his show to compete with E3 for press attention. Its time for Sony, MS and Nintendo to push back.

I think it will be more of an advanced version of what the VMU for Dreamcast was.

You have to realize that they want, to some extent, to show how their games are different from what iOS offers to the mainstream market, that they're far, far more sophisticated games worth the money.
At the same time, they have to adapt to a world where someone can transfer their games, music and such between an iPhone, iPad and a Mac. The console and handheld gaming experience have to evolve a little to stay relevant in a more mobile-oriented culture. This is a way of doing that.
Also, you're neglecting to think of the people that don't own handhelds.
Nintendo and Sony are looking for ways to make you want a 3DS to go with your Cafe and an NGP to go with your PS3. On that score, they've succeeded with me, but I was a big handheld gamer anyway.
But that guy that gets MGS collection for PS3? He's also getting a voucher for the PSN version of MGS Peacewalker. That's a free game not being used and people tend to like free shit. Once they see how cool that game is at home they may very well want to have the option to play it on the go.
Why leave out that option? With NGP that game is actually going to upscale not only visually, but adapt to the second analog stick - an interesting feature that all PSP gams from PSN will be enjoying - though I don't know how it works, I'm certainly not going to complain about added functionality (though I do worry about durability with protruding analog sticks).

Re: The E3 2011 thread
LULZ Origin.
EA is the reason I was already seriously hesitating about even trying out TOR.* Their bad online account management and repeated bugs (like not being able to play the game you've paid for and all additional content if you go online because the crappy system says you are not authorized) really make them the last place I'd look for games online.
Heck, I was all ready to buy the 2 scenario DLCs for DA when I was hit by the not recognized bug. They haven't been able to fix it (nor do they seem to care about fixing it) to this day.
And don't get me started on the whole Cerberus network thing.
So yeah, unless EA has nothing to do with the subscription service (impossible, I know) I may not be playing TOR after all.
*Which is very sad for me.

Re: The E3 2011 thread
Well, this is odd.
- I thought Insomniac was a Sony first party.
They're set to reveal a game that EA will be publishing for PS3 and 360 (and possiblyCafe).
So "hnh" in response to that.
EA announced their version of Steam, called "Origin," which launched yesterday and will be the only portal by which Star Wars: The Old Republic will be available (aside from retail).
To which I say "lol, will fail most certainly." Really, EA is a company that is shitty to their fans and will only be offering EA games on this thing, so I kinda fail to see the point of it. This and CoD Elite are terrible ideas. We can say competition is good for business, but again, EA is shitty to their customers and Valve isn't. Sharding services and content away from where its popular to download or view it is just dumb all around. Why bet your MMO on this?
