  • Devil Survivor 2 coming to DS

Atlus is developing Devil Survivor 2 for the DS- Destructoid

DS games are still comin' it seems.

While this might seem confusing in the face of 3DS getting a enhanced port of the original Devil Survivor, DS2 was slated long before Index Corp jumped on Atlus to have something for the 3DS near launch.

Devil Survivor was great, so I'm content with a sequel on whichever platform. I'm sure they'll do an enhanced version for 3DS down the road at some point, but then, Atlus is one of the few developers I'd buy a game again for.

thats cool, but also odd, you would think that they would hold DS2 back a little and enhance it for 3DS

They could release it on Game Boy Color for all I care, I'd still buy it.

Maybe they don't want to tie its success to an unproven just-launching console. There's a bazillion regular DSs already out there. And hey, 3DS users can play it too, it just won't make them cross-eyed.

Are people already buying into that horrible rumor? I have a 3DS and it does not make you cross eyed -.-

People buy into every single rumour you hear about games and games consoles. Why the hell would it change now?

Which explains the 3DS version of the original Devil Survivor coming in June. I'm going to side with "Devil Survivor 2 was on the books before Atlus ever had 3DS dev kits."

Devil Survivor was a big sales success for Atlus, so they're double-dipping on the first since it has some acclaim going for it and that will sell to 3DS users while working on the DS sequel, which works on the 3DS anyway.

I think 1.2 million 3DSes sold on its first day in the US - that's based on pre-orders filled, not the 600,000 others units that shipped, which will sell - is a sign that people want this thing. Contrast this to the Wii which only shipped with at 500k on its first week.

If by "buying into" you mean "joking about", yeah. It was just another way of saying "they can play it in 2D mode".

Otherwise... probably yeah anyway. There's hardly anything some people aren't dumb enough to believe.

Yeah, that's possible too. Nintendo, 3rd party devs, insert standard rant here.

But even if they had 3DS dev kits... the install base of the regular DS is many times larger, and will stay that way for at least a year or two. How much more are the 3DS users (or people with both systems) willing to pay for 3D games? And it's not like SMT of all franchises is going to lose sales from not being on the most bleeding-edge hardware; they have some fans so hardcore, if they came out with a game in 1D, they'd try to play it. (Heck, I might even be one.)

Now, if they could make one cart that played in 3D on a 3DS and 2D on a regular DS, without having it cost a zillion dollars to develop or fabricate, that might be worthwhile. Otherwise, the regular DS version is bound to be higher priority in the short term and a 3D remake with a few more bonus bosses later. That gives them a chance to sell the game twice to some customers.

Early adopters always think the world revolves around them, but it doesn't.

Atlus is just a brute machine churning out titles after titles. Not sure if any of you are subscribed to their mailing lists but most of my notification on my Aria are from Atlus press releases.

Atlus has three sides to it:

                      Atlus Japan/Index Corp
                      Atlus Online
                      Atlus USA

Atlus USA does lots more than translate Atlus games, but also localizes and publishes games for other small developers (and sometimes large ones like SCEJ when SCEA wants to be a dick about things).

Atlus Japan just makes games. Atlus Online and Atlus USA don't really make games at all, but localize, publish and manage other games as well as Atlus' own games.

At any rate, it sounds like you're diminishing what is truly a great team for such a small developer. In a time where other developers big and small are struggling, they've manged to thrive.

Re: Devil Survivor 2 coming to DS

Seems Atlus has another DS game lined up, this one started production during Etrian Odyssey III and its a collaboration between The EOIII team and the guys at Gust that make the Atelier games, called Nora's Engraving Shop: The Witch of Misty Forest.

The story seems to be that a young woman sets up shop in a new town, but draws suspicion because she bears a striking resemblance to a local (and hated) witch. So she uses her own time-bending magic to try to resolve the matter (or maybe just make things worse). Takes place over the course of three years, mutliple endings and such. It hits Japan July 21st.

No new news on Devil Survivor 2.
