Re: The TGS 2010 thread
To date, Monster Hunter Tri has been the only MH title since the original on PS2 to do alright in the states. I have a teeling MH Portable 3rd might do as well because of the inclusion on online play, not to mention having all the monsters, environments and armor from the previous games and Tri.
Monster Hunter is gaining ground in the west, but its doing so slowly. The "grind" isn't really even the problem, its the sluggishness of combat, the cryptic nature of trapping, the ineffectiveness of sleep and paralysis tools and the big monsters' penchant for being able to call upon infinite backup mobs.
MGS Peace Walker put a limit on back-up for monsters (and soldiers during vehicle battles). You could put down back up mobs/soldiers down with less hassle. And everything telegraphed a lot better. The battles were still highly endurance-based, but not major resource burns like Monster Hunter's could be.
The grind of Monster Hunter is actually an improvement over the Diablo approach games have been aping for too long. Grind levels, grind for loot at pray a rare weapon/armor drops, but have to compete for it. Sell all vendor trash to the local merchant. That's the old Diablo model.
In MH, everything is a resource and everything can have a use or purpose. When a monster goes down, everyone can loot for the same parts (even if it doesn't make sense anatomically), so everyone has the same chance to work toward a new weapon or armor. It may take some time, but at least everyone gets the same opportunity to get a special weapon, rather than one rare dropping in blue moon and only one person can grab it. Usually the asshole that doesn't need it.
