Hands On With Power A's Mini Wiimote: 35% Smaller, But Probably 35% Better

"Power A, the people who made the Xbox 360-style controller for the PS3, just miniaturized the Wiimote and Nunchuk and are releasing it in one package. It's 35% smaller than the standard Wiimote, but actually feels more natural.

The MiniRemote and MiniChuk comes in one $50 package in black, purple, pink and teal. It has larger A, 1 and 2 buttons, a better speaker, a more contoured back and standard compatibility with WiiMotionPlus and other third-party addons.

The smaller body felt great when we were playing with it, and going back to the real Wiimote actually felt awkward. The MiniRemote is more balanced as well, which is better when you're playing something in horizontal mode like New Super Mario Bros.

I asked Power A whether or not they could possibly put the Wii MotionPlus accessor into the actual remote so you don't need to get yet another addon. They said it was theoretically possible, but they're not doing it yet. Perhaps next year!

The bundle will be launching in August. [Power A]

    Ooo....

The new buttons are fugly as all get out, but I do like the smaller size. The D-pad is such a pain to use on the standard controller.

      Re: Smaller Wiimote

I can't imagine making the controller smaller and still having it be usable; and I have rather small hands. The D-Pad is the only thing on the Wii remote that takes any reaching, other than that it all falls into place. The D-Pad is never really a problem, since typically the things that are up there are things you don't want to be bumping very often. It's second nature to me now to flick the remote back to use the d-pad, though.

More than that though, the Wiimote is used in more than the mote+nunchuk style. It's already pretty small in the horizontal mode, I'd have to imagine this is just plain squishing your hands together.

My only real complaint with the Wiimote is that Nintendo needs to build motion plus in. It's just plain stupid to have to buy the attachment. Hell, I'd pay five or ten dollars more for a controller with motion plus built in, just for the sake of not having a damn piece of plastic to lose. It's the major reason I haven't bought any M+ games yet.

Agreed. It's especially awkward when fumbling with the Wii-condom.
