You can read the details in the link, there's also video there, but the play is similar to FFXII except it seems you can't pause the action and only control the main character with the exception of party skills.
There is another difference, though. One of the skills is called "Vision" which you can use to see into the future of the battle and what will happen to you or one of your allies. Using this battle will pause the combat and show an event that will happen in battle. In the video, you see one of the allies get one-shotted in a particular attack that will happen within the several seconds after the vision
Knowing this, the hero can command defensive tactics to prevent that death.
