Apparently having multiple models of a particular handheld product line is a winning strategy otherwise Sony would not be copying Nintendo. I believe we're up to 4 different models of PSP.

Consoles have always had different iterations, going at least as far back as NES (toploader). PS1 had revisions (the main one that effected consumers was the one that removed the serial port on the back and made a lot of GameSharks incompatible), and then the PSOne. N64 had umpteen different models, from Translucent to Pikachu. PS2 had the PSTwo (Slimline). GameCube had the Wii.

I was about to buy a DSI XL untill I found out it was $200. Now this gets announced so I'll see how it works out...

I really don't understand how the world works.

First, when portable devices were first gaining mainstream attention, companies attempted to make the devices smaller and smaller. When they finally achieved that, they turn around and start making portable devices bigger and bigger.

Make up your minds.

Nintendo themselves said it was their policy that each new iteration of the Game Boy would be smaller than the last. But I think they're looking at the DS as a different product. To be honest I kinda wish they had added those big screens a long time ago, they look niiice.

Well amongst the gamers, one positive thing that everyone could agree on was that the PSP's screen was a better size. Not that it helped it that much. lol I think Nintendo heard that but I also think they want to expand the user base. Look at the Wii and how it surprised people that the older generation was now interested in gaming. I know every local nursing home here has at least one. So I think Nintendo is looking to capture some of those people with the XL. The screen is bigger and you can even select a bigger font. It's a smart move. Gamers will like the bigger screen (but not the size overall I think) and the older generation will be thrilled that they now have a handheld they can enjoy too.
