I wasn't talking about official tournaments or all tournaments, but I have seen it happen locally.

    Ken and Sagat in particular.

I wish they would ban Astaroth from SC tourneys, he's been broken since SCII, but they seem to weaken everyone else. Of course, Nightmare once had the same problem.

Weird. If you are talking about ST, than yah, I could see a possible softban on O.Sagat. But Ken? Sure, his jab dp is really really good, but still punishable. Ken has gotten progressively weaker in newer games (except 3s).

I honestly don't think banning is the right solution unless there is documented evidence that a banning is required. A lot of times, there are knee jerk reactions to certain characters or tactics that looks like it warrants a banning, but as the game evolves, you realize the banning was never necessary.
Burning questions are burning: Is jenova_9 really a girl and is she cute? Does she talk like that in real life?

      Burning.

Banning has a purpose, though, it prevents everyone from picking the highest, most overpowered tier all the time. Empoleon isn't banned from Pokemon competitions because people are overreacting, but because everyone agreed he was that overpowered and there was evidence of it.

And that's why there are character's banned in other kinds of competitive games.

In FFXI, we all have come to agree that FFXI PVP goes south the second it becomes an uncapped affair. We agree further that items are fair to use because without them, things like paralyze and silence would be crippling. And then SE did what it could and penalized gear swaps for various reasons.

And so 60 cap, items allowed with a default gear set is the best way to play it. Everyone who's played the various jobs and played PvP have come to agree on these points. In WoWs case, these terms aren't even up for debate, so the PvP will never achieve a balance.
