Nintendo to Launch DS With Larger Screen Next Month - PC World

Might be old news. When I saw the title, I thought it might possibly be a DSI with a larger screen...nope its a DS reboot. Article says it probably won't make it here until early next year. If it costs more than the DSI, I think I'd rather just wait for DS Lites to drop to 99.99 lol.

Bah, I already dropped $60 on an old school DS this year. No way I'm gonna pick up another system, especially if this one has also dropped the GBA slot.

Why would they add the GBA slot back when GBA games haven't been published for over five years now?

I like backwards compatibility and it used to have it.

Because GBA had great games that many people won't throw away and it sucks that your handheld doesn't play them when it could? Also it doesn't appear to be a DSi.

Yeah, I got a better chance of buying a DS or DSI next year than a PSPGo or this new DS. I need one anyways so I can play Phantasy Star Zero.

DSi LL: Nintendo supersizes its gaming handheld | Crave - CNET CNET provided more info and pictures. (Thanks CNET) It is apparently a DSI.

(Does the LL stand for Leaping Lizzy?)

Yes, but DS Lite is still manufactured, so there's your option for the GBA play. If that's what you want, you can get that.

I'd be lying if I said I'd be putting Lite's GBA slot to use since they don't make new GBA games anymore, though. All I would be missing out on at this point would be... Guitar Hero? I'll live. DS isn't exactly hurting for games.

In the GBA's slot's place, I get MP3 playback, downloadable games - few and far between, but there are good ones - the Flipnote animation app, web browsing and cameras. I think I got a good deal there. And there's the chance that they'll put GBA games up on DSiWare someday.

Til then I can check out the original content brought to DSiWare. Its getting better, really.

Dragon Quest Wars, Mario Vs. DK Minis March again with level creation and uploading, Mighty Flip champs. And on the horizon, Reflection (PoP style game) from Konami, Shantae 2 and Hills and Rivers Remain (an original RTS from SE).

If a Game Boy store comes along, all the better. What I like about DSi and PSP right now is that I can have multiple games on one system without having to switch out so much stuff.

Also this has been confirmed to be a new iteration of the DSi, it will be released first quarter in the US as DSi XL.

I'd rather keep my DS witht he GBA slot in it. I still play the original gameboy games. Those where the good times. I play paper boy still XD

I just don't see any reason it can't have both.

                      DS Lite.

DSi was designed for an older demographic than DS was, one that probably never or no longer cared to play GBA games.

Re: New DS with Larger Screen.

No, I meant all the new shiny add-ons that the DSi is bringing in addition to backwards compatibility.

I still don't see any reason not to have it beyond "oh, we can't be bothered", which is a piss poor excuse.

                          And a younger demographic.

Keep in mind that a fair number of kids chugging away Catchin' 'Em All and saving the Princess on DS right now are kids that were potty training when the DS came out. FFS, a fair number of kids with DSi/DSiXL are probably kids that were BORN after the DS came out. That was five years ago, dudes.

They really do not give a damn about the GBA, and they won't until at the very least they're old enough to look past the Toy-Factor in games and into the art of games for games; probably older before they gain an interest in retro gaming. Really, how many of us played old games for the sake of playing the classics, and not just because they were available or fun, before we were teenagers?

Re: New DS with Larger Screen.

All the games I did care about for GBA have either been remade in some form, will be remade eventually, improved upon via DS or will probably be downloadable to a Nintendo handheld platform of some kind in the next couple of years. Nintendo will reproduce things that made them money.

Even with all the flak PSPGo is currently getting, Sony is seeing a surge of attention on PSN because of it and its benefiting all PSP users. That should be more than enough incentive for Nintendo to get in on that in the next year or so. Half of my PSP purchases so far are downloaded.

Losing my attachment to a physical medium for games is becoming a rather simple thing. Not to mention I'm not given shit about my library growing when family comes over to visit. I can't get lectured about games that aren't taking up space on the shelf. Ha.

At the same time, I'm happy knowing wherever I go with my handhelds, I'll never be bored. I'll have at least seven games loaded up on each at any time with no need to switch things out.

Sounds like you're banking on things getting remade or released as downloadable content, which may or may not happen.
Personally I don't trust downloadable content simply because I've played enough games, DLC or otherwise, where the company tanks and vanishes off the face of the earth at which point having a physical copy of the game is a hell of a lot more reliable than trying to re-download something from a non-existent service.

I'm still not hearing a valid reason not to include the GBA slot.
