Appears so. Also appears Atlus fails at making a good teaser site. "Megami" was found lurking in the initial source code of the teaser site, but Atlus has since removed that. Too late, cat's out of the bag. New SMT title.

This is probably the PS3 installment of the main series that's been in development for a few years now, we'll know more next week o.o/ And if it is an SMT title on PS3, that means it will probably hit stateside early next year, given its an October release in Japan and Atlus has a really swift localization team.

So that means we'll probably get it in the UK sometime after the 2012 Olympics . I love whoever decided to bring it out on the PS3 so I can just import it once it's out in the US.

Being serious now I have been getting into the MegaTen series a lot recently. I recently picked up Nocturne and DDS 1 and 2 which should keep me entertained for a while and I managed to get a copy of Devil Survivor (whoever mixed the volume for the music on that game needs shooting, it's so distorted it can be ear piercing if you listen to it on headphones) from a local import specialist so the announcement of a new SMT game is exciting .

Yeah, they had some J-Rock guy come in and compose Devil Survivor. I have a DSi, which has better sound processing, so it doesn't really get to me that much. Meguro does most of the compositions for the series and its spinoffs and his work on Nocturne and DDS is excellent.

People tend to decry his work on the Persona games, though. It never ceases to amaze me how dense people can be regarding different musical styles. Persona is a series about high school teens in a modern day setting, so for the daily events in those games, he tends to compose pop-style music for it. I think it works perfectly, but the emo kids on the Atlus forum don't like that, it all has to be gothic rock.

He recently reworked the Persona remake's music to reflect the feel of what he did on the PS2 games and they're screaming bloody murder over it. I've listened to tracks from both versions and the new stuff is fine, really.

Meguro is actually a tremendously talented composer, able to tap many different styles and suit them to the setting and themes of the games he works on. I look forward to his work on the next SMT flagship game, as the stuff from Nocturne was some of my favorite.

It might be because of the DS itself like you said. The Disgaea port sounds absolutely horrible on the DS compared to the PS2 and PSP versions because of that.

I really liked the music on the Persona games (and P4 coming with a free soundtrack CD was a really nice bonus). I didn't really like the amount of rap on the Persona 3 soundtrack but it does fit the game and setting pretty well for the same reason you gave so it didn't really bother me much. Pop style music fits the more light hearted tone of the Persona series better IMO, I can see why gothic rock really wouldn't suit it. One of my friends summed it up best by saying that "Persona 4 is the most cheerful game about murder that I've ever played".

It's best to ignore the people being dumb about something as petty as soundtrack differences. Die hard purists will always decry a spin off of their favourite series regardless of how good it is and will use even the slightest excuse to complain about it. I mean it's not as if someone is forcing them to play the game Clockwork Orange style . Although that being said I do often find myself turning down the volume every time Fuuka says something on Persona 3

I've only heard the couple of songs from the Persona remake on youtube but I like what I've heard. I have heard a lot of Nocturne's music on youtube actually and I do like a lot of the demon's boss themes and the intro theme. I do agree that Meguro is very talented and he is quite underrated as a composer IMO.

Turns out its not SMT IV, but its just as good.

SMT: Strange Journey is new DS title made by the Etrian Odyssey team. It will make use of the engine used in EO and the battle system from Devil Survivor. Dungeons will be explored in first person (similar to how it was done before the SMT that appeared on PS2). You will be exploring a rift between dimensions that appears over Antarctica, obviously a dimension full of demons. To explore this dimension, you'll be donning a "Demonica" power suit. This will allow you to do combat with demons and be augmented with various functions to help you explore the dimension (think of the visors Samus used in Metroid Prime, its kinda like those upgrades).

There are some notable departures from series tropes:

(1) I doesn't take place in Toyko, Japan
(2) The cast is multi-national and multi-racial
(3) The cast is comprised of adult characters, not teenagers.

But Demon Negotiation, Fusion and the Press Turn style systems seem to be there. Meguro and Kaneko are both on-board for this one and Kaneko will pack this one with the most demons to ever appear in an SMT game - over 300 - and showing off many new demon designs.

Countdown ended, the teaser site is live now.

They have some videos up and its looking very nice. Looks as eerie as you'd expect from a MegaTen game.

Request: Can we please have the title changed to "SMT: Strange Journey Revealed" since its not SMT IV?

Fun Fact:

Someone translated yesterday's Strange Journey site updates and in the developer interview posted there it was revealed this actually is SMT IV, after all. Heh.

It was also mentioned that the wanted to make an SMT game people on both sides of the pond could appreciate, so they took it out of Tokyo and gave it a more diverse cast.

And lo, the trend main series console game-to-portable trend continues.
