  • Yet another remake of Lunar.

The Magic Box - Lunar: Harmony of Silver Star Preview (Page 1 of 1)

This will be the third time the first installment of Lunar has been remade and updated.

    Seriously.

Its apparently an exciting announcement to some, but I find that kinda disturbing, really. They can't even finish the sequence of the series elsewhere before remaking it again.

Still, its coming out for PSP, no publisher for the US version confirmed for it yet.

    Um, yay?

Never got into this series myself. Always a few steps in before becoming incredibly bored with the flying cat chatting my ear off and some lame kid's aspirations to become the greatest hero ever. Tried on Saturn, then PSX and DS... didn't take the first three times, so I don't see it happening with this one.

Least they can do for the real fans is stop teasing them with these remakes and actually move forward with the series.

The first remake was awesome, but the 2nd remake on the GBA was terrible. They dumbed down the difficulty and the humour, making it feel less like a classic and more like a "My first rpg..."

I consider the PS version to be the definitive version of Lunar: The Silver Star. I still get teary eyed whenever I listen to Luna's boat song. ^.^`

I'll probably get this new remake, because I'm a fan. I'll follow news about the title, but if it has more in common with the GBA version than the PS version, I'll pass.

Why think of something new when you can just remake an old game and market it to a younger generation? Hell, even most Hollywood moves are just remakes these days... :/

Next Generation cast did their overtly environmental movie already, it was called Insurrection. It sucked just as hard as redoing IV would.

Personally I think its awesome. There is a new generation of players out there that haven't played SSS and its a good game. I'm also looking forward to playing it again because its a good game. I own all the JP and US versions and played them all. If you have played it and think its stupid to remake it, then don't buy it. it's that simple.

Jeez people pick on Mal for stupid threads, this thread was made to just piss and moan about a remake of a good game. I don't see the point.

I'm not talking about the SAVE THE WHALES because there's a very small chance they're the secret to saving the planet and then wouldn't we all feel like dicks plot, I'm talking about the Star Trek cast in the present day element. Good god, even Voyager got in on that hilarity.

Ever since I started studying languages, the way the universal translator is used bugs the crap out of me. When you consider the cultural differences between languages, and the way they're used (for example, literal translations of set expressions and idioms), such a device would be horribly suited to anything beyond technical matters, and things where simple direct communication is important. When they show two alien races together, who probably don't speak the same language, having a cozy dinner, it just seems really wrong. I want to say that people just changed their speaking habits to suit the translator, but that obviously wouldn't apply to all of the primitive species they encounter.

I know it's just a show, and making up new languages for each Alien Of The Week and then subtitling them would be even more stupid, but come on.

My underlying point was Game Arts needs to quit teasing their fanbase while doing nothing in the way to make the game more accessible or interesting to newcomers/old critics while moving the series forward. While some may say the DS version was easier and less interesting, it doesn't really matter that it was easier given the latter was very true.

Ubi Soft published and localized the DS version for NA and EU territories. It wasn't good at all and it was mostly because Ubi Soft took an old game and made it less interesting. Bad enough the plot and main character are cliche as hell to start with, worse that Ubi Soft made it sound more boring than it was.

Its stuff like this that gives remakes a bad rap. The point of a remake is keep what was good, build on that and help make it a bit more accessible to the new audience. This doesn't mean dumbing it down - because FFIV DS and Resident Evil weren't dumbed down remakes - its just means updating it for the new generation.

This sounds to me just like its catering to the old fans, which won't really do much to move the series forward.

If someone like Atlus or Nippon Ichi got thier hands on this for localization, you could consider me interested on a story and character level - those two studios get great English localization on a regular basis, often even taking a bland or poorly translated script and making it shine - but its on Game Arts to show us that the game is worth playing this time. And once they get those new fans, they're obligated to maintain that momentum.

But right now, I see Lunar like I see Shenmue or The Matrix - its a franchise that ultimately goes nowhere.

                      AWESOME SAUCE!!! ^ - ^

                      It's such a damn shame Working Designs is gone now though. Before the company went bankrupt they were planning Lunar 3 for PS3 ; ;

I will very likely buy this. I own Lunar SSS and it works just fine on my PS3, but there's no guarantee my PS3 won't ever break down (being a 1st generation model and all) and if that does, there goes my PS1 and PS2 playback (at which point I'll be very pissed @ Sony which is a fairly rare thing for me; I've never had the issues other people have had with Sony products so I guess that skews my view on them a bit)

The only thing is, if they release it in the U.S. and Canada odds are they'll have new voice actors which won't sit well with me at all. In fact that will likely be the make or break condition for me. Yes, some of the lines in Lunar SSS were fairly cheesy and lacked the best delivery but that's strangely not a detriment to the game. Kyle ftw bitches.

Re: Yet another remake of Lunar.

Sony's approval process was part of the difficulty in Working Designs getting these games out and what ultimately led them to closing their doors.

WD would do a good job of localizing these various niche games and layering incentives on them, but SCEA would just look at them, say its not a priority release and they wouldn't get approved unless they were bugetized down to abysmal levels. Good for the consumer, sure, but bad for the developers. It ended up not being profitable for Working Designs and the developers they localized for.

What I never understood was SCEA would even stonewall Konami or Capcom on niche releases, but Atlus and Nippon Ichi always got through the process with their niche titles unscathed. I love Altus and Nippon Ichi, but remain mystified as to why they're treated so much better than others.

Re: Yet another remake of Lunar.

Sony even tried to block Symphony of the Night because it wasn't 3-D...

I love their products, but I loathe the company's ludicrous business model (again I point at GTA 4; IGN wrote an article about how Rockstar approached Sony asking for $50 Million to secure GTA4 as a PS3 only title, but Sony said no. Small price to pay I would think for biggest selling, console-pushing franchise ever conceived in North America)

I mean Sony was taking losses either way, but at least that would have lead to far more PS3 sales and thus more confidence in developers (in regards to earning enough to cover their asses. your average next gen game costs 15 million these days, never mind the A-list stuff. IIRC M$ spent something like $200 million to make, they really went all out on it. Good thing it made over $300 M in the 1st week O.O)

Working Designs isn't the company that made Lunar, but the company that did also went out of business IIRC (can't recall the name for the life of me; WD was a U.S. company that localized them)

If Game Arts went under, how are they remaking it for PSP now? Working Designs went under because of Sony's cockblocking approval process. Steve Race is long gone from SCEA and yet they still pull things he would have done back when Playstation first started out in the western market.

Funny thing is now he's the CEO of Majesco -a company that publishes niche titles.
