Re: Attention Ye Who Doubt the PS3

The PS3 is, for the last time, not too expensive when you consider all that comes with it. As to whether or not people want to pay for it, well, that's entirely up to them.
Problem is, I don't really care about all the extras. I don't want to pay for them, I just want to play the games, but I'm forced to buy the whole package no two ways about it.

It's not too expensive for all it brings but it is too expensive for a video game console. It's like saying a $1000 video game system isn't too expensive when you consider it doubles as a fully-functional refrigerator. Well, yeah, sure, but I'd rather just remove the fridge and buy the console for $300. Granted, the PS3's extras are a lot more practical and desirable than a fridge but that's besides the point.

'Tis a very expensive video game console no matter how you look at it.

Re: Attention Ye Who Doubt the PS3

ps3 was a pretty good buy for me. My ps2 was in really bad shape and after years of playing countless ff11 hours on it the thing needed a rest. There was a couple of months where the CD drive part would'nt open till... well you get the point the ps3 replaced ps2 nicely and even plays ff11. The real reason the system is such a great buy for me is its the only way you can play tekken online. Tekken is awesome to play against real people, much more fun than playing it alone. Also ff13 wont be anywhere else but the ps3, I don't want to miss that game.

Pretty much anything that xbox360 will have to offer that I would really want will also be on ps3 like GTA, Soulcalibur, Street Fighter online, Street fighter4. Since FF13 will have a VS version of the game I imagine people will be able to battle each other online in a fast paced Final Fantasy rpg which, along with online Tekken, pretty much has me leaning so far PS3 over other systems it tips me over. Last thing ps3 needs to make my fully happy with the future of the system and my investment in it, would be to release some online playable RTS like command and conquer or anything similiar.

As for the damned price for the thing, yes its high but dont get a refurbished 60gb kind over a brand new 80. When I went in to buy it the EB games worker acted to me like I was crazy to want an 80 then tried to sell me a 60 on the premis it plays all ps2 games. I went with the 80 and all the ps2 and ps1 games I own work on it also I already have half of my HD space taken up in months so the more space the merrier. The ps2 emulator partitions 10gb just for starters.

I don't know. A fridge sounds much more practical to me than a grill.

You basically said why I don't need a PS3 - it has everything Xbox 360 gets except FFXIII and MGS4. So I'm basically just looking at those two games.

As awesome as those franchises are, when you look at how much a Wii goes for, its too large of a sum to pay, even for two of my favorite franchises ever. There are no other PS3 games of interest and even SE is admittedly shifting a greater development focus to Wii. Where they go, I go. When PS3s get down to $250, then I'll get one.

I saw where the wind was blowing this generation when Dragon Quest IX was announced for DS. If SE puts a major franchise on a handheld, we know things have gotten too expensive for the general consumer and the big developers alike and does big damage to the small developers and retailers as well.

The whole point of a console was to bring arcade quality games into the home. Just because arcades are no longer a factor doesn't mean we're supposed to get less and less value and more expense. Nintendo seems to understand value more than any other, but at least MS got a little bit of a hint, too.

Actually I believe 1 of the versions of FF13 will be on 360.

But consider this; 360's biggest selling point is XBL. Now, the stupid console is the only one that doesn't have built-in Wi-Fi. The wireless network adapter costs a whopping $120.00 here. That right there actually pushes the thing higher than the a PS3 (though marginally). Never mind the other extra crap (paying for XBL isn't much, a year subscription comes down to $5.00 a month)

The 360 wireless adapter is definitely a rip-off much like their charging $179 for a fucking 4200 RPM 120 GB laptop hard drive (assholes). It's not really a problem though, because you can connect a wireless bridge to your 360's ethernet port and receive a wireless internet connection at a fraction of the cost.

Can't do anything about the hard drive though, aside from buying an Elite from the get-go.

                    lolwut. FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII isn't a battle game. It's a single-player action-RPG.

And Yoichi Wada has said that Square Enix doesn't have any plans for major 360 releases unless Microsoft gives them some incentive...so unless MS finally gets around to footing the bill for a major title from Square Enix, I don't think we'll see any FFXIII-centric games anywhere other than PS3, PSP, Wii and DS. It certainly could (and probably will) happen, though. It wouldn't be a bad investment for Microsoft at all.

I like the idea behind FFXIII being a universe of various games, I just don't like that Kitase and Nomura couldn't be left out of the mix for another installment of the franchise, the emo /wrist-fest of FFVII, FFVIII and FFX was more than enough for a few generations of software, they need something new to do.

And my four year old home PC has been used for cancer research. That doesn't make it awesome, that just makes it a goddamn computer.

I'm no fanboy and I detest people who are. If you are a true gamer then you should be supporting both systems because it benefits you in the end. You get a healthy competition which gives you a variety of games and that makes any gamer happy. I love my PS3 AND my 360. If you look at my library of games though, you'll see a definate shift towards the 360. Why? Because there are a lot of games for it and a lot of the games I like to play. The PS3 got some games that I love to play but I had bought them for the 360 already. Good games dribble out for the PS3 but not enough for me to use it regularly.

I don't doubt that the PS3 is a great console, I know it is. I do doubt Sony's tactics with their console. They may have won the format wars (Blu Ray vs HD-DVD) but they didn't win the gaming war.

Not unless you actually want to buy all systems involved, AND you support games being made platform exclusive.

Personally, I will not support MS in any way I can avoid, so supporting the 360 would be backwards to me. Supporting the PS3 and Wii and letting MS lose would be just fine for me.

Having competition in our hobby does benefit every gamer. I could care less who manufactures the systems because it is the games that I enjoy. MS haters that run around shouting that the 360 sucks just because it's made by a company they don't like drive me bat sh*t crazy. (Not saying you do this but you are on the 'I hate MS' bandwagon.) Two or more companies competing to get your hard earned cash means they want to put out good games. (ie. either their own development or that of other developers) If they don't have good games then their systems don't sell, their systems don't sell then they don't make the cash. So even if you don't like one system, for whatever reason, you do benefit in the end just by its very existence.

Ah, yes, because having an opinion and randomly following trends are close to each other. Tell me, TGM, do you consider anyone that doesn't dump chemicals into their local water supply on the 'environmental' bandwagon? There are plenty of valid reasons to hate MS, and the 360 sucks completely independent of them. Problems like RRoD and overcharging for accessories rather speak for themselves. Are there people that jump on the 360 because they hate Microsoft, and hate Microsoft for no specific reason? Sure. But just because someone has an opinion one way or another doesn't mean they're hopping on some bandwagon just because it's popular.

Also, no. Competing consoles only drive better EXCLUSIVE titles. Which basically means that it turns the goal from producing quality hardware to hogging all the quality developers you can. Quality games would still exist on a single console because developers would be fighting to have THEIR game be popular.

Look at the PC games industry. There's basically only a single platform (Windows), and other platforms' (OS X, Linux) games consist entirely of ports. I don't think I've once seen even a minor game for a non-windows platform that didn't have a Windows port as well. Yet, there are still quality games. There are plenty of great independent games, such as Kenta Cho's titles (One of his games is being remade professionally for Wii.), Narbacular Drop (old, but was eventually turned into the amazingly popular Portal), and so on. There are also strong professional games, Command and Conquer 3, Orange Box. This has been the case for at least a decade or so in computer games, and the PC has the incredibly popular World of Warcraft, not to mention far too many classics to count.

These games are not out to sell computers, they're out to sell themselves. You don't have Dell or Gateway or HP making games that require some exclusive chip on their machines to play, in an attempt to sell them. You see hardware companies making hardware, and software companies making software. Not crappy hardware companies buying good software companies to attempt to sell their product, or good hardware failing because of a lack of software.
