If sony would A- allow the PS3 to use it's graphics card while it's in linux mode, and B- port WINE, or even an entire OS to run smoothly on PS3, I might actually consider getting one.

PS3 itself is way too expensive imo, and there's only one or two games I actually want-- however, as a computer, especially one that could run WINE, it might be worth a purchase.

How hard would it be to give us a version with the ability to install our HDD?

Just release ONE damn console and sell the HDDs seperatly...

Re: 40GB "Core" PS3 Coming This Month, MSRP $399?

Because Sony's "Core" is much different than MS's "Core".

          MS's Core leaves you naked.

Sony's Core still gives you functionality. So the only one thing I disagree with is that BBQ called it the "Tard pack". Otherwise, Omni made a good point by saying that we got so used to the high price point that $400 seems like a steal.

But I can say that the PS3 at $400 might be a better buy than the XB360 at $400.

And HDDs ARE cheap, good point, but laptop HDDs seem to be a tad more expensive than 3.5's.

On a sidenote- I was never a fan of Ratchet and Clank, but it was dumb of me not to be, because of the two RnC games I played, I enjoyed the crap out of them.

(The one's in mention are "Size Matters" for the PSP, and Deadlock, I think it's called. It was the last one on the PS2 to my knowledge."

Jak and Daxter is also a fun franchise to play with, even the Daxter game that came with my PSP is enjoyable. It could be the fact that I hate loading screens, so both games suit my portable needs well.

the PSP PS3 connectivity needs to be more robust, because there is so much damn potential there that it's scary.

Certainly that would be the case, but the 360 isn't $400 anymore. However, I think the $50 price different for the Premium 360 and the low-end PS3 is fairly reasonable. Having a PS3 model priced lower than the 360 Elite, given its specifications, is pretty comparable as well.

There's no denying that this is a pretty darn good price for a PS3 if you're not interested in backwards compatibility. Even the 40GB is much more useful than the original model's 20GB. I don't think anyone's arguing that here.

And BBQ, while my opinion of this fall's release calendar varies from yours, I do agree now, because Unreal Tournament 3 may be delayed to Q1 2008. Mark Rein still says they're trying to release it before the end of the year, but a potential delay means the PS3 missing its biggest console exclusive for 2007. I'm miffed about a chance of a delay as UT3 is my most anticipated console release this year, but Ratchet and Uncharted will do for the month of November. New titles from two of the best console developers on the planet in the same month is plenty to keep me happy, alongside the major releases like Rock Band, Mass Effect and Call of Duty 4.

Why would you use UT as a strong point for the PS2? If a game isn't exclusive, it shouldn't be considered a huge benefit to a console... especially when it's an online FPS deathmatch, which is still going to win over PC gamers more than console gamers.

I don't see how Unreal for PS3 is a major title when most of the releases for the entire series on on PC, which has always been the market for that particular franchise.

I really don't know any console gamer that even cares about that one when they, you know, have Halo 3.

Yeah, ignoring Resistance and all, but bias can overlook that one, since it really is the only one worth mentioning in the history of PlayStation.

UT3 is a high point for PS3 on consoles not only because of its timed exclusivity but because it retains nearly all of the features the PC version will have access to, barring the actual ability to create mods, and because cross-platform play isn't a sure bet for launch but is still in the cards. Just because Halo is a rock-solid title and sells like crazy doesn't mean that all other FPS out there are inferior to it. There are still more FPS games worth purchasing on both platforms to come.

any fps on console is just (in my book) not really a true great fps. i know that halo sales would make a good counter argument against that but im just a bit og as i used to play quakeworld ctf back in the mid 90s.

Well, I'll give you that Unreal did let you play cross-platform back on Dreamcast (Or was that Quake III Arena, maybe both). But outside of FFXI, cross platform online gaming is still very much a dream gamers have, persistantly thwarted by one of the big three, which changes from one generation to the next.

That said, each console has had its own strengths, but FPS has never been one for Sony's.

                            Resistance
Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of. It was supposed to be a killer app, but I haven't heard of one person buying a PS3 to play it.

in addition, from what I can gather, it took 7 months for Resistance to sell 1 million copies (this is probably wrong, as I can't find any good sources on this), compared to Halo 3 which managed to sell 1.7 million copies before it was even on shelves.

How you could not consider Resistance a bomb is beyond me,

I certainly agree with you on that, but you seem to be misinformed about cross-platform play when it comes to Sony.

Certainly Microsoft supports it, but they charge PC gamers for the ability to play with 360 owners...which certainly takes away that advantage. However, Rein has stated multiple times that cross-platform play for UT3 is in the cards for the PS3 version, and while the feature was canned for the game's launch, it's still something they plan on pursuing after its release.

It's not a major advantage, but it's certainly a bonus for the PS3 version. The 360 version will also apparently not support mods like the PS3 version, which is much more important. Despite that, UT3 will be a fantastic title for both consoles.

How you could not consider Resistance a bomb is beyond me
So every game that "only" sells 2-3 million copies is a bomb? I guess independent developers shouldn't even bother these days. I guess every Devil May Cry game so far has been a tank. Metroid Prime 3? Definitely gonna bomb, Nintendo should have just sold Retro Studios before they decided to release it.
