    Re: Holy ****ing ***crackers!!!

I haven't played much starcraft personally. But the reason it was so popular was because of how little PC power it needed, how easy to create your own custom map, and how the game had at one point became free to download.
So no matter where you are in the world, no matter how crappy your PC is, you can always starcraft with your friends.
It's especially great when you have close friends playing. I used to play with people I know every night.

RTS is generally a genere that appeaers on PC and now commonly on the Nintendo DS. By platform, its just not practical to release them elsewhere due to lack of keyboard or mouse controls, though the stylus of the DS or a Pocket PC could be adequate for RTS as well.

Starcraft was very popular in the mid-to-late-90's and garnered enough popularity to also be released for the Nitnendo 64 (super-rare now). Blizzard has given more attention to thier Diabolo and Warcraft franchises even though Starcraft was the most popular of them all.

This is why people are excited. I know people that still play Starcraft over Warcraft III and other RTS.

I know about the RTS genre. ><; I just don't see the appeal personally. I thought it odd to see people getting all excited over what I see as just another RTS.

But I'm glad people are happy!

It's not just another RTS o_O; It's a follow up of probably -the- most played RTS in the world.

I think Jei just hit the nail on the head. People wanted WC3 to be SC2, and so forth, people wanted WoW to be SC2.

Well, finally. I think I was in love this morning when I found out that it was confirmed (we all knew it was SC2, because seoirusly, if blizzard announced ANY OTHER GAME at the KOREA NATIONAL INVOTATIONAL... Yea, USA would not be alive today).

Since Half Life 2 Episode 3 probably won't be out until 2009, I predict we have Game of the Year 2008 on our hands.

I so want an HD version of that trailer to put on my PS3 and watch 500 times.

Hmm... that makes them twice as good as Square Enix!
                      I think you're missing a few.

                        Re: Holy ****ing ***crackers!!!

Yeah, Enix games notwithstanding, I had plenty reasons to be a fan of Square without Final Fantasy. Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana and Front Mission are all franchises that have held their own and many of the early SaGa games were awesome as well.

Then there's the Chocobo's Magic Dungeon series, Musashi, Parasite Eve, Tobal 1 and 2 and Ergheiz amoung eithers. Square's very first game was Rad Racer, published by Nintendo.

Blizzard is just WarCraft, Diabolo and Starcraft. We could count Lost Vikings and Rock'n'Roll Racing had there actually been a new games lately, but I doubt Vevendi Universal gives a damn and the founders of Blizzard are long gone to form Dawn Studios.

                          Re: Holy ****ing ***crackers!!!

Well, say what you will about number of franchises or whatever. I enjoy the hell out of both companies' games. Starcraft is widely regarded as the best RTS ever and from my limited experience with other RTS games I have to agree. Starcraft had a great story, factions that were almost completely asymetrical and still very tightly balanced with eachother, and an easy-to-use and flexible map editor that gave the game practically limitless replay value through user content.

I'm as happy to hear about this as I would be to hear that SE is making real sequels to CronoTrigger and Final Fantasy Tactics. (CronoCross and FFT:A don't count, imo. -.-)

I'll never understand the appreciation of FFT to the extent where FFTA wasn't a "real" sequel. FFT had one of the most dull, overwrought stories I've ever had to endure and FFTA just let me play the damn game instead.

Chrono Trigger sequel - they'd have to get Sakaguchi, Uematsu and Toriyama back to make it work. They went and made Blue Dragon instead for Xbox 360, that's gonna have to be the one instead.
