Re: New Final Fantasy MMORPG

They need to make Moogle a playable race in the next FF MMO.

Oh wait. Then everyone would probably play Moogle. Hmmm...

hmmmm kinda reminds me of when EQ decided to switch to EQ2 and split their base between the two. /shudder
I hope they resist making it a replacement where they try to phase out the old one in favor of the new I've still got stuff to do on my current character that I'ld like to finish before the playbase starts disapearing.

btw starwars galaxies was a realy good sci-fi MMO before the infamious update that chased away gamers in droves.

Plus there's some nice plot threads that could be picked up (
regarding the Occuria specifically
).

However, more realistically it'll either be a completely new universe, or they'll probably stick it into yet another reimagined Ivalice (not FFXII's world).
Reimagined or not, it is still the same world as a few past games. I would prefer they start from scratch or stick with Vanadiel in the future (or like, the other side of the world or something).

My only problem with that is if it was a new world, they'd slap a new Roman numeral on it. It bothers me enough that years from now I may wish to relive FFXI, show it to my kids or w/e and the servers will be down and the game unplayable.

That wouldn't be the case with a single player game, but its a recurring problem with online games as they'll only get supported for so long.

A game taking place in the future of Vana'diel? No thanks, that mistake was already made with EQ2. It divided the playerbase and many have just stayed with EQ because they didn't want to start over in an new MMORPG. If EQ2 had simply been an expansion with a new engine, that would have been fine with most people, but EQ2 made you start over with little more than a hand-me-down heirloom from your EQ character to your new character. Worse was the faction system was removed and the starter cities reduced to two.

Going to a previously established world would be a draw for many single player fans of the series, especially so if you went with something like FFVII or FFXII.

My core problem with a FFVII or even FFXIII MMORPG is that they're already designed to be episodic. Anyone who followed The Matrix, .hack or Shenmue had to be really pissed off about the unecessary moves that were made for a cash-in.

Shenmue was actually more like a point-and-click adventure with a dash of Streets of Rage/Virtua Fighter-style brawling thrown into various situations. While the series as not very popular, it had a great story to it and lots of Japanese and Chinese culture thrown in (even if the voice acting was of horrible, Resident Evil proportions). It was one of the first games to have really detailed towns and cities, as they predated the GTA series.

Shenmue 2 was handled poorly by Sega in distribution and chosen platforms, but the sequel was still great in scope, story and even the fighting portions.

Then came Shenmue Online, its probably the biggest slap to the face I've experienced as a gamer. Not only was it billed as a direct sequel and took place in the Shenmue 2 world of Hong Kong and Kowloon, it was made to be distributed only in Asia. This after the US and EU regions played the first two games.

There is word of a Shenmue 3, but no confirmation about development. Could they have gotten to it sooner without an uneccesary MMORPG? Sure could have. Sega fails (again).

And Sega published The Matrix Online. Sega fails yet again. Three movies and the Wachowski Brother's grand follow-up is and MMORPG? The Matrix Revolutions was bad enough, worse is the whole trilogy was a blatant ripoff of somone else's story.

EQ2 wasn't a mistake at all. Have you played it? Lately? It's awesome. And lots of people play it. Yeah, it did split the population, because people weren't going to leave EQ altogether just because a "sequel" came out. Just as, no matter what, some folks aren't going to leave FFXI until they shut down the servers. But it wasn't a bad idea at all, and after a bumpy start it's now one of the better MMOs out there.

I'm sure there would be an incredible draw to setting a future MMO in an already established FF world, but I wouldn't play it. I don't want to see a bunch of leet idiots running all over Midgar or Besaid. But that's just me. I'm sure tons of people would play it.

And there is no reason why they would HAVE to put a roman numeral on it. There is no logic to that statement.

Not satisfied with Final Fantasy 11's success, Square's dipping Final Fantasy into the online sauce again!
                Wut?

No one said it was a "Final Fantasy" game.

btw this "Spira's Destiny" group or whatever are idiots, and at the very least, a poor news source. More than 5/6s of that "news" article is made up / opinion and the last 1/6 is old news.

Said it already, they tossed out the faction element and reduced it to two starter cities. That alone removes most of my interest in it. Freeport wasn't an "evil" city, it was neutral. Its like the people who made EQ2 didn't even remember Everquest.

Being a barbarian from Halas kinda loses its thrill when you're forced to start from Qeynos

Final Fantasy XI - they didn't have to do it to this one either, but they did.

I thought it would have been to do with the whole World of Mana thing. Sounds good either way!

QQ. It was part of the lore of the world. They are slowly "rediscovering" parts of the old world after the rending and the shattering. Starting the game with the world intact as everyone knew it would have been boring.

If you expect a sequel to be just like the game previous, then you're generally in for a rude awakening. Regardless, just because you aren't interested in it doesn't mean it isn't a successful game, or a viable option for creating an MMO sequel, which is all I was saying, before you wrote some dissertation in response.

Thank you so much for reminding me that this game is called FFXI. I didn't know that!

Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles didn't get numerals, so it really just seems to be an arbitrary decision on their part. Besides, what does the number matter at all? It's not like these games have ever been true sequels.

Still, the loss of the faction system hurts the game. that's the biggest change I don't like. It made decisions for good and evil characters feel more defined

FFVII Advent Children, Crisis Core, Before Crisis and Dirge of Cerberus. Okay, AC was a movie, but still a direct sequel.

Those aren't true sequels. They are games with characters from other games with entirely different game styles. And you're right. AC is a movie.

Re: EQ2, I actually agree that the lack of defined faction hurts the game a bit. I saw more Teir Dal in Qeynos and Koada Dal in Freeport than I really felt there should be. Being able to "betray" was one of the dumbest ideas ever. But on the other hand, just because I don't like it doesn't mean a lot of people don't. Seems like most folks really enjoyed being able to play on the opposite faction.

There are now three starting cites, and likely to be a fourth in the next expansion. So while it's not the same as EQLive, with a city for every race for the most part, it's getting somewhat there.

Ok, whats wrong with using the FFxii world? I am partial to that world because that was my 1st experience with FF games. I feel a really good idea would be to expand FFxi's storyline and maybe have it be the players from Vana against another world(where it could start to become a true player vs player-lol, maybe not). I guess I like futuristic worlds better (must be the star wars fan in me) so I say use a variant of FFxii's world.

My only concern, if it's for Xbox360 and PS3, is if it'll be limited later on? Just as the PS2 limits PC users with it's crappy GUI and textures.
