Re: Can games make you emotional?

I dont even see why such a question would be asked, why wouldnt a game give you emotions? do books/movies/music not give you emotions? A story is being told, and theres many ways to tell a story, the matter in which it is told does not matter, imo.

I did cry when aeris died, i have no problems admiting it, and to this date the deep hate for sephiroth is still there, each time i see him i just want him dead and gone for ever, ever. No more sephiroth clones, no more visions, just vanish already! Bastard.

Other highly emotive moments are vivi's resolve at a certain point in the game, and zidane's friendship with him, they both ride the same boat, and they know what it is to be in that situation. Along with so many other moments that make the series my favorite.

I was heartbroken when Aeris died in FF7. I also got emotional when Snake was talking about Boss in during the final scenes of MGS: Snake Eater.

The only thing I felt at Aeris's death was annoyance because I'd wasted time leveling her up and spending gil on gear for her. When I went back to replay, I didn't make that mistake again. Stupid Aeris!

Re: Can games make you emotional?

I studied films and media for 2 years, the power of editing even in games would suprise you on how it will effect how you feel.

Final Fantasy is one of those games (all of them from 7 from this point on as I dont know the others) all have one thing in common, they are 3d, and the designers used that to their advantage big time while other games did not. Its hardly suprising they done a good job.

In Final Fantasy 7 the second you are introduced to Aeris's character you are given the feeling there is something very different about her. while Barrett and the krew are running around blowing up reactors she doesnt seem to know much about it, innocence? probably.

The way people relate to characters is very important, and Final Fantasy 8 was the very game people could relate to the characters directly. Irvine was constantly on the touch for the girls, Squall was depressed because of his bollocks childhood, Selphie was a normal kid basically, Seifer the bully, etc. It was very easy for people to identify with this. Again, being final fantasy, they arent the most realistic games, but the emotions shown are quite realistic. Each CGI sequence was put toghether very carefully, especially the ending, and the power of editing prevailed. :p The big difference with 8 was that it had a happy ending. 7 did not have a happy ending; one of the characters were dead and it was a cliffhanger (at the time), no one knew if humans survived or not, considering Red XIII wasnt a human. I cant remember a lot of 9's ending, but I remember it being happy, it reminded me more of an ending to a kirby game then a final fantasy game. X certainly did not have a happy ending, because someone was still sacraficed to save the day.

Wont comment on 9, cant remember a lot of it, didnt like it much either.

Final Fantasy X was similar to 8 I thought when it came to the characters personalities and emotions. A far cry from 7, and 9 was in a world of its own. Since this game was as good as playing in CGI sequences if it were on the original playstation, the designers had a lot more to work with on how to edit to portray feelings. Thats why some people on this topic say X was the saddest or most emotionally fufilling of the lot (I would agree). Most of the game involves the player on a bigger level. You are told the story as it goes on untill you reach Zanarkand. That doesnt really happen with the other 3, probably wouldnt have worked as well either.

Take another game mentioend in the article; Metal Gear Solid (as in MGS, MGS2. MGS3). The original was filled with the power of editing, as I like to call it. Infact its probably the very film that resembles a film the most. MGS3 definetely had an edge to it other games dont have; it had ironic patriotism if you happen to be American, anyone who has played the game to the end knows what I mean. Patriotism sells well, probably more than sex.

As far as FFXI goes, I dont find it emotional. You are the character, and you are playing with other people. Crafting, EXPing and general banter on your LS take priority of the decent storyline FFXI has. Because its happening to your virtual self, you arent on the outside looking in. MMOs are a whole different world of their own and I find it hard to explain anything about them.

Mog; I hated aeris, but surely you couldnt be that cold hearted even the way the cut scene goes you cant help but wonder if hope is lost and all that. (although knowing ff games, youll have to take on the baddy in the end anyway).

Re: Can games make you emotional?

I'll admit it, I get more emotional towards video games then books or movies.

                          My Emotional Times In Gaming

                          FFVII-Death of Aeris
Suikoden 1- King Barbosa proffessing his love for the evil Windy then both of them falling to their death.
Suikoden 1- Black saving his dragon rider and then Luiken using part of the dead dragon to make a potion to wake up the other dragons.
Wild Arms 1- Rudy cuts his own arm off to free himself and goes into critical condition. Emma tries to help him at his workshop but she can't help him because of the material Rudy is made of.
Suikoden 3- Too many to mention.
Suikoden 4- Snowe betraying the hero who was his childhood friend
Shadow Hearts- Alice sacrificing herself for the Yuri.
Shadow Hearts Covenant- Yuri's memories of Alice

I'm still working my way through many of my games. They've been a tad neglected since I got FFXI but I'll get around to beating them eventually.

Re: Can games make you emotional?

I cried when I first started playing X-2 and IX. Of course I drug myself through them because they were Final Fantasy games. Seriously though, I agree if books and movies can evoke emotions then games could also.

I have never really been sad in games though. I get annoyed and frustated at times (ending of Halo 2). I also laugh and have fun too. So I would say yeah games can cause all types of emotions.
                            Thanks Kazuki.

Re: Can games make you emotional?

I tear up at just about any emotionally charged moment in games. Whether a character I'm attached to has died, been murdered, something irreversible has happened to, or whether a particularly beautiful moment has happened, I will tear up.

How about music? I've always had a connection with the 'Prologue' song from Final Fantasy. It's the song that "Melodies of Life" from FF9 breaks into at the very end of the song, but I think most anyone who's played Final Fantasy knows it. It's such a beautiful song, that I have cried when I hear it.

                              Yes, I really am a guy <

Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals

That one made me cry. Especially the ending.

                                Aeris dying as well.
Yuna and Tidus when he had to go.
Squall and Rinoa, and how he said if she ever became a sorceress, he would be her knight.

And this stupidly sad story. Meeting Again
