The Liepzig Games Conference in Germany is now underway!
First at the bat is Nintendo, showcasing a press event titled "Wii Prove Our Promise." New details about the Wii and its games are coming in just moments, with a few "surprise announcements," according to Nintendo.
Here is IGN's live coverage of the press release, updated accordingly and completely for our discussion. Times have been changed to my Eastern Standard Time.
4:38AM: Large female % of Touch Generations players (44%) is emphasized, with 600,000 sales of Nintendogs helping this figure, says the speaker.
4:40AM: Speaker still citing sales figures. Animal Crossing sales are 150,000 in Germany alone. Brain Training is a top seller in many European countries and has also sold 0.5 Million in Europe.
4:42AM: 35% of sales were to people over 35 years old. Speaker is now talking about Brain Training and how it has sold 60K units every week in Germany alone.
4:43AM: Speaker still talking statistics - hardware sales for the DS are apparently "counter-cyclical", which means the typical summer sales drop did not occur this year and by July there was a very rapid increase in sales.
4:45AM: Speaker has finished up. Introduces the first guest, an immigrant..
4:46AM: The guest is a TV presenter. He says he was surprised to hear Nintendo wanted him to speak at the Games Con. He laughs, "I didn't think they [Nintendo] knew who I was!".
4:47AM: Guest speaker mentions his love of Brain Training and says he plays it all the time. They hit play and a video appears on the screen of the TV presenter guest speaker. He is playing a DS Lite. The game is Dr. Kawashima's Gehirn-Jogging.
4:50AM: They announce that on October 13 Nintendo will release a new game called Learn English for the Nintendo DS. They fire it up on the DS on-stage and are about to show us a demonstration. The game is designed to teach non-english speakers how to speak english (der!).
Now back to IGN's coverage:
EDIT #2: Pretty fed up. IGN's coverage is really, really terrible.
From now on, I'll be posting directly from the CWN coverage.
5:10AM: More DS footage. Oh my! A bunch of people just ran out and started dancing around the stage! They have Wii controllers in their hands. Yes, this is the Wii segment of the presentation now. Get ready...
5:12AM: Music is being played, they're still dancing around. They are now explaining the Wii to a young girl. "Do you play games somtimes?" "Sometimes, yes." she says. "Do you own a Nintendo DS?" She says "No."
5:14AM: Girl takes up a Wiimote in her hand. They start playing Wii Sports Tennis. She's not bad. The TV presenter dude is missing the ball. The girl might win! They are about to show a NEW GAME! Finally. Nintendo of Germany head honcho comes out on stage and announces, "Sport is currently the new trend at Nintendo." German football pro Philip Lahm appears on screen, playing Wii on a football field. They are showing Mario Smash Football, AKA Super Mario Strikers...
5:19AM: They show off the special moves in the game, called 'super shots'. Mario jumps up in the air and fires a ball down while the other player blocks the ball with his Wiimote high up in the air. Pretty impressive stuff!!
5:20AM: They are winding down. On screen balls are appearing. It's 2-2 and everyone is excited. Another super shot pulled off. 3-2. The TV presenter dude wins! "We are convinced you will enjoy it, and you can try it on our stand!" Moving onto another new game now..
5:22AM: They are now showing Battalion Wars 2! They say it will also be playable at their booth. The topic shifts to third party developers and how Nintendo are supporting them. EA, Sega, THQ, Activision, Konami, Namco, Square Enix, Capcom, and Ubisoft are mentioned. Another trailer kicks in on the big screen...
5:24AM: Wii Sports Tennis is shown, followed by Wii Sports Golf. Orchestra game is shown. We've seen most of this previously at other shows. Similar to E3 2006. Excite truck is shown, then Super Mario Galaxy which gets a bit of a cheer, the Wii Plane demo, Metroid Prime 3, Table Tennis (not the Rockstar version), WarioWare, Baseball, Red Steel from Ubi Soft, then Zelda: Twilight Princess.
5:26AM: It was the same reel from E3 i think! They are finishing up now. Nothing more to show it seems. "Wii Prove Our Promise" shown on screen, followed by "Playing is believing". End of the presentation. Microsoft starts in a half hour or so.
Well, that was pretty darn disappointing. I'm off to bed. ~_~
