  • The most important video you will ever see

    I'm sure this is very (very) old news for many people, but I just found out about it today. Just something to think about.

    And here's the link to the playlist in case someone is interested.

    PS > And it reminds me of this for obvious reasons.

    PPS > I'm definitely not going to have children unless something very good happens. <_<;

        So .. you're not going to have children because our resource demands are increasing at an accelerating rate? Like they have been for all of human history?

              It was a side comment not directly caused (although slightly reinforced) by these videos. Just not going to have children because I think is a waste in the world's current state.

              So like I said, unless something really good happens -that makes me believe my descendants will live in a better world than I did- I see no point on contributing to the over population of the planet.

                Not saying we don't have problems to deal with, but by what measure is the world we live in not better than the one our parents and grandparents had? Quality of life and individual utility continue to rise globally while negative social factors such as violence, prejudice and disease continually decrease.

                  Problem with this logic is that it can't be universalized. If everyone did this, humanity would die out. What you would want is to have just enough children that humanity's population breaks even.

                  The other problem and perhaps the most concerning one is that stupid people won't follow your example. If every smart person refused to reproduce, we'd be left with only the offspring of idiots. We have enough idiots as it is, I'm gonna do my best to skew that ratio back towards smart people =P

                    I saw a documentary about this once.

                      If anything, watching Idiocracy told me that I absolutely NEED to reproduce. And maybe put bleach into the water supply at the trailer park.

                          We advance in some fields and digress in others (like democracy.) If we could advance as a society (world-wise) without overpopulating the planet and going beyond the point of no return about resources I would say we are indeed making progress.

                          Thing is, the more I see the more I feel the advancements we are making may not be fast enough to stop our self-destruction. And that's probably a big understatement.

                          Heck, this video is 12 years old (filmed in 1999) and it covers things I have been thinking for years now and explains them in a better way than I ever could. If you haven't watched this before I suggest you check it out so you can see where my opinion is coming from.

                          Whatever you take from it is good. And if you think the guy is a looney that's ok. But it's something that has been bugging me for a very long time now.

                            What makes you think Big Brother won't run this planet into the ground even without overpopulation? The wealthy elite don't give a fuck about preservation, they just care about living the good life in their lifetime.

                              The idea of a Malthusian catastrophe where the accelerating demands of the population outstrip the productive capacity of the earth was first made in 1798 and it has consistently failed to happen. For that one we had an agricultural revolution instead, for this one we'll come up with something else. When we have a Dyson sphere and our energy production is falling behind I'll admit maybe we're in a pickle, but until then I have faith that human innovation will find a way.

                              And say what you will of democracy, but you have to admit it's a lot better than other forms of government that have come before. Likely a new, better form of government will spring up somewhere as the flaws of this one are laid bare.
