Allowing gay marriages doesn't really affect anyone, though its worth pointing out that even most of the most-liberal states in America seem to have something against it.

The scapegoat as always is Christianity, even though several other religions that frown on homosexuality, you know, given some of those religions even share some of the same religious texts as the Bible. Fun fact.

But if we made fun of Jews, Muslims and other people of faith, we'd be "intolerant," by making fun of what Christians and Scientologists believe only then can we remain tolerant. Just like Janine Garofolo, only funny.

And even though we'll claim to support gay rights/marriage, we'll continue to snicker at gay jokes anyway and call things "gay" when "sucks" works just as good. This is tolerance at work, folks.

Seriously, though, unless they're living in the same space as you, I think you're safe to bend over and pick something up. If they're lesbians, doubly safe. In fact, sometimes that can be hot. Well, unless one of them is butch.

Lots of people are intolerant, but say they're tolerant because they pick acceptable targets. I'm different. I realize they're still being intolerant, because I'm so tolerant.

I think it has to do with money, to be honest. Sure, bunches of relgions have anti-homosexual beliefs, but none of them put up as much money to fight gay marraige and other civil rights issues pertaining to homosexuality as many Chrstian churches do. Proposition 8, for example, had outpourings of donations in support of the ballot measure from across the nation, with the LDS in particular taking an interest in it. I know that at local (to myself) LDS churches, followers were urged to send as much money in support as they could.

Christianity is the most prominent religion in the United States, so of course it is going to take the majority of the force from gay protesters. If the roles were reversed and the United States was predominantly Muslim or Jewish, it would be those groups who would be receiving all the hate.

Well unfortunately, you can't speak for your "spouse" unless you are legally married. In hospital situations, in legal situations, etc. At that point, it will fall on his/her parents, which may not always be in agreement with the husband/wife (even if they're not really married). Typically, spouse has say, but if there's no legal spouse, they have nothing, unless there is Power of Attorney designated. (This is rarely the case).

I don't think marriage confers any power of attorney. That has to be set up in a separate agreement. At least I can't find any mention if it in the Texas family code. Here's the section entitled "Rights and Duties of Spouses:"

Sec.A2.501.AADUTY TO SUPPORT.A (a)AAEach spouse has the duty to support the other spouse.
(b)AAA spouse who fails to discharge the duty of support is liable to any person who provides necessaries to the spouse to whom support is owed.

That's it. No other rights, privileges or clearly defined responsibilities. The entire rest of the code deals with communal property, relationship to children, domestic violence, and what to do about the above in the event of a divorce. My wife can't look at my medical records without my expressed permission, nor is she allowed access to any financial papers that my name but not hers is on. I've heard plenty of stories about spouses being kept on the hook for life support costs when their decision to let their irrecoverably comatose others die was overridden by the hospital or other relatives.

IIRC, he made a good point about how the GOP shouldn't opposing it is largely on Religious grounds, which shouldn't have any place in politics. As far as the state is concerned, all that it cares about is the two people love and will care for each other, property rights etc. I'm paraphrasing here but it was a good argument.
