Re: Obama's Speech on Race & America
Instead of saying nothing, perhaps you will outline the modern political relevance of his speech, hmm?Originally posted by Malacite View PostKeep telling yourself that.
Rules:
#1 You can't quote his website or any other source material.
#2 Everything you say about him must be from the speech you originally posted.
After you do that, we will have something relevant to discuss instead of you're current "Nuh uh..Yes, huh.." bullcrap.

Keep telling yourself that. I for one choose to believe in Obama.Originally posted by Sabaron View PostThis because his speech is designed to "put fire in the belly" and sound pretty or righteous. It has no true substance, and does not represent how he will behave politically if elected.

Re: Obama's Speech on Race & America
Your original post is in support of Feba who is attempting to argue that slavery exists and therefore is a political issue (implicitly). Therefore, the only options one has when politicking based on the issue of Slavery are (a) increase enforcement to draconian levels (e.g. Random House Searches), or (b) increase the penalty (e.g. Capital Punishment).Originally posted by TheGrandMom View PostI have no idea what your retort to my post is supposed to mean. My post stated that there is still an illegal slavery trade in the U.S. You post that the cases I mentioned were illegal slavery.....um...yep. Did I mention anything about searching homes? passing more laws? doing anything at all about it? Nope. So I'm totally baffled by your quoting me and your response.
If you're saying that it's not an issue, then you are in agreement with me that the (long-winded) portion of Mr. Obama's speech dealing with Slaves and Slavery is of no modern political value.
The whole point of my original argument has nothing to do with Slavery, Feba simply drew the issue out to troll the thread. My original point is that that particular speech by Mr. Obama fits, by very exact definition the word:
This because his speech is designed to "put fire in the belly" and sound pretty or righteous. It has no true substance, and does not represent how he will behave politically if elected.Last edited by Sabaron; 03-19-2008, 01:35 PM.

Re: Obama's Speech on Race & America
Er. Race is as much of an issue as member of those races make them out to be. That said, this country seems a tad on the obsessive side when it comes to race relations. Beats those countries which one group just assumes its all that, and sweeps everyone else under the rugs just because it can, I suppose. (Whips out my *I'm a minority* get out of jail free card.)
None of the three major candidates are particularly clear about the economic policies, AFAIK. None has the guts so far to state: "Things are dicey right now, and there's no clear course out of this mess." Likely none will ever admit to not knowing what to do. Or even fess up and tell us Fed has more power to mess up the economy than to actually fix it. Meh.
Clinton likely has the most (indirect) experience dealing with the economy, while McCain is certain to consult people with different views and analysis then make up his mind instead of just order a consensus from cronies.
No freaking clue what Obama would do--he's the great unknown. Exciting, and dangerous.
Want a budget? Competence and pragmatism in policies and politics? Clinton.
Want a moral backbone? Someone most likely to attempt the right things? McCain.
Want a chance at something new? Obama.
I'm quite happy with the choices we have, if not entirely happy how the campaigns are playing out. Then again, I may just positively thrilled that we finally going to lose Junior from the office, and would be happy anyone else takes the desk.
Can't wait.
* * *
If the issue of president is really about repression, Clinton should be given the office sans contest. After all, women have been suffering under societal shackles longer than there has been written history.
Unfortunately, this is supposedly a contest about policy, competence, etc., so we have to go ahead and pay for this election and vote in it. Can't skip it. Sorry.

QFT. And I find Obama extremely clear on his positions and policies. Yeah, he could really stand to speak up more of them on the trail I know (where it really does count) but everything is outlined clear as day on his website (which actually has been the biggest factor in his success)Originally posted by Ziero View PostIn the end, it's all just semantics though because that phrase is nothing but PC terminology, which is something I've never been too fond of.

Yes, his Father is an "African American", but Obama himself is just an American.
He is of African descent, but he himself is not 'African'.

Re: Obama's Speech on Race & America
In other words, you're referring to someone like Barack's father who was a Kenyan national and who came to America. That's my point here. I did it in a bit of a snarky way though so you might not have picked up on it.Originally posted by Ziero View PostI think the point was that the term "african american" should describe people who immigrated from Africa itself as if you are born within the US you are a US citizen.

Re: Obama's Speech on Race & America
The entire tirade about slavery was in regards to the legal ownership of african slaves and how it relates to todays politics. And while talking about it, Sabaron mention that the legal trafficing and ownerships of slaves was no longer an issue in todays politics because it doesn't exist and has not for over a century. It was in regards to the race issues that were brought up and modern slavery is far less about race and all about illegal activities regardless of race, gender or nationality.
The point of *illegal* slavery is moot because that was not in anyway involved in the original issue being discussed. Everyone knows that's wrong and that's why it's currently illegal.

Re: Obama's Speech on Race & America
But see, TGM, this whole thing started because Sabaron started talking about how there isn't any legal slavery. And then Feba was all "nuh uh!" and most of us were like "yeah huh!" No one is denying that illegal slavery is going on. Lots of illegal things are. But that has little do to with the point Sabaron was (originally) trying to make.

It's already illegal, can you make it more illegal? Would you like to implement random searches of dwellings to "check for slaves"? I suppose we could use Capital Punishment.

I think the point was that the term "african american" should describe people who immigrated from Africa itself as if you are born within the US you are a US citizen.Originally posted by Olorin401 View PostOh cool you're half-Irish then? I'm only a quarter Irish myself. I am half-Italian though.
Or to make the point with a quick anecdote, back when I was in high school, my US history teacher went around asking what nationality people were. Kids would answer "half irish half italian" or "a third a this, a bit of that" etc. And after randomly asking a number of us, and getting similar answers all around, he prominantly exclaimed we were all wrong. Our heritage was italian, irish etc etc, but our nationality was American. Because we were born here, thus we are all american citizens...except for that one chick who was actually born in France.
Anyway, the point Sabaron is trying to make is that Obama's heritage is African, but he himself is a pure American. Just as much as Sabaron's heritage is irish.
As for the slavery issue, again the point is not that there's no slavery in this country, it's the fact that there's no legal slavery. It's now a felony crime of the highest order and not something condoned or participated in by the US government. As of now, Slavery is a legal issue that is to be handled by the police and government officials to stop and prevent it from happening, but it should not be a major political point at this time and age. For over a hundred years Slavery has been a crime. If someone participates in it, they are a criminal. That's not up for any kind of debate. And at this time, there is few, if any, people left who even remember the time of slavery here. And most certainly the average american has not been a victim of slavery.

obama's father came to America from Africa and his mother is white. (he personal has NO credit or connection to a slavery background)

I have a 2 year old little girl and I pity the life she is gonna have bc of the ENTIRE gov. and 75% of the population. I say 75% of the pop. bc thats the % of dumbass live here.

Step out of the damn class! Its our GD right to respect our country that gives you the right to be a crying biotch.
(But thats treating him differently from everyone else)

People who use tax money for sex, God striped from the pledge, 10 commandments removed from court houses. Im sorry for this rant but im tired of it and people who are just plain dumb and think they are F!@#ing special.
