Yeah, really wasn't worth the hassle for me to try to find something on my own with the limited time I had for job hunting due to school.

I think he means that having a prior government job on his resume should have made his job hunt easier. That's how I read it though.

Because I felt the same way about military experience for a while, was told having it on my resume would make a huge difference but ... not really, unfortunately.

Basically yes. And I don't mean the provincial govt but federal. That's typically a big plus here in Ottawa. Of course with Harper downsizing the shit out of everything... I mean it's not like I've been sitting on my ass, I've been actively seeking a new job since my contract with CRA ended, just haven't had shit for luck and I honestly don't have a clue why, I've got really good references too :/


It's all extremely discouraging and it's also why I wanna try and get into streaming - if I'm gonna spend time gaming anyway (to try and maintain my sanity while looking for work) might as well try and make something out of it. It's worked for other people >_>

My setup blows though, and AFAIK PS4 still doesn't archive videos on Twitch which is quite honestly pissing me off royally. Doesn't help that my ISP is a twat muffin that keeps throttling me either.

Honestly I kept gaming while unemployed because I needed to do something, and when I was unemployed I played a F2P MMO to keep myself busy. You can job hunt all day from 9-5 but you still just need to take time off and relax and recharge at night.

I wish I could offer some advice. My least favorite thing is when someone who's been working for 10+ years tries to tell you about how to hunt for a job or how easy it is to get a job, because the job market really has changed. My dad has worked at GE for nearly 45 years now and when he would try to tell me about job hunting I would just kind of shake my head and be like, "Okay dad." Because he just doesn't get how job seeking has changed.

Ugh it's fucking awful now. Even for just a shit job at Target, they pretty much want your life's story (including your social # which while not illegal, the govt. does discourage employers from asking for it before hiring you) and there's almost no person-to-perosn interaction anymore; It's all apply online and fill out a 10-page essay on why you love the company and how you'll be a tremendous asset to them over everyone else.


I mean really? It's a shitty retail job, not Chief of Staff of the U.S. govt. or a CEO of some company etc etc.... like goddamn, especially when they know full well most people are just gonna bullshit it anyway.

Yeah your name just kind of goes into this invisible data bank, I sometimes wonder if people even monitor the e-mail addresses that the job applications go to. That's why I refuse to use sites like Career Builder because they never respond back.

I really hate the way that job hunting has become less personal.

I think so, I'm just extremely distraught lately as my bank account is dwindling fast and while I'd love to go back to school I've neither the money nor the grades so my options are sorely limited (had nothing to do with being a bad student, in fact my teachers all thought I was University material and I love learning - I just hit some very rough times in my last few years of highschool that really fucked me over and I'm just now recovering from about a decade of depression)

Mal, as someone who had pretty much the same thing happen in high school, take this for what you will. I'm 33 and I'm going back to school - for the fourth time - and I'll be real, most of the schools don't really give much of a fuck about your grades in high school. Now granted I don't know what the school system in Canada is like, but I've gone back to school and my high school grades (or SAT scores) weren't even looked at.

If you go to like a community college and at least get an Associates degree that might help and you can use that to transfer to a bigger or larger university to finish up a Bachelors. Then again, Canada, so I don't know about any differences.

You can't get into any post secondary programs unless you graduated with the right kind & number of credits, and on top of that grade scores matter as well. I can try, but i'm pretty much hosed AFAIK...


EDIT: IIRC, "M" was for either college or university, and then there were "C" & "U" credits but you could only take so many M courses in high school.

Yikes, never knew it was that bad over there. I put my qualifications and education, and in the section where I was told to basically write my life story, I wrote that I wasn't going to place my sultry lips on the company's ass to get the job, I just need money.

And I still got the job. Though to be fair, the manager and most of the staff are totally inappropriate, it's great.

I swear to god it is all luck in getting a job, unless you know someone who already works there and that person isn't a shithead and/or is part of the hiring process.

Let's not forget qualifications and connections. Well, for good paying jobs, anyway.

If you can put this sentence on your resume and prove it, I guarantee you only need to add name and a contact method to get a job:

"Valor Victorian, Harvard Business School, class of 2013."

And I'd laugh it off as a joke if you say the offer was less than 100k.

You do realize that I was deployed to the Middle East during OIF in 2003, right? I'm really not afraid of war zones or refugee camps, and trust me, they stuck me with a whole host of needles back then, too. Most civilians haven't been inoculated from Anthrax, I would imagine.

I think so

This is what you need to do then. You go in and apply with a temp agency, and they find you work. It's not a fun or meaningful job, but it's a paycheck. If you work out with the companies, some of the time they comapny will hire you on full time. This is what I did with 2 of my employees.
