Some of us can't afford to take time off no matter how sick we are. I generally don't get much more than a cold, but I don't get paid sick days. If I call in sick, I'm off the clock. Eight hours is about $65 (roughly) that I don't get in my paycheck. That's my electric bill. If I'm so sick that I'm vomiting/nauseous/can't focus, I'll take the hit and stay home a day, but not more than one day, or I'm behind.

As for going shopping? No, I'll stay home.

As it is, this battery thing put me back. Last week was a four day week, and so was this week. I ended up popping in an hour late, and there's no money left now for gas. So I have called a friend who I will meet after work, he is going to give me $20 and I'm going to buy him food with my EBT card, which I know is illegal, but it's do that or miss work until Thursday, which would make the problem far worse.

What pisses me off the most is that of course, I went nowhere all weekend. I didn't have the money so I stayed in. If I had decided to go somewhere, I might have gotten this battery done before it made me an hour late for work.

If I get sick now, I hope it kills me. I honestly can't afford it at this point. That goes for car accidents, too.

Another peeve of the day: Finally got around to logging in work after counting and sorting it, and since this work is from last week (read: last year), I figured the system would assume 12/28/2010 when I simply log 12/28->TAB->Next field. This is something I've gotten used to. I mean the system couldn't possibly assume that we're logging work from a date that has not yet happened yet, could it?

Oh, it so could. So yeah, I have to actually go through and type 12/28/2010 on every single log until I get to this year's stuff. And yeah, we have stuff from 12/29, 12/30, and 12/31. Awesome, right? Yeah, it's minor I suppose, but it's going to take me longer, especially for every one that I forget and have to tab back to correct it.

Of course I knew that, but I would have thought someone who is smart enough to create computer programs and software such as what we use at work would be smart enough to program a clause somewhere that would realize that, obvioudly, we're not logging things in from future dates. There must be some way for the computer to understand that, right? I mean it understands if I type 21/12 that "21" is not a valid month.

Orz.

Of course, like most work places/programs/procedures, it's not beta tested by the people who will actually be using it. Because asking your employees to give feedback on a program they'll be using is obviously retarded.

Well fact of the matter is that logic testing, while seemingly easy, can in practicality be a bit difficult to actually program in. Even moreso if the programmer is under a time constraint. I know this from experience on the current web script I'm working on: a number of places request dates, but adding in code that would check to see if the valid would be a logical one (in the past or future, depending on the field) would take a bit of time that I frankly don't have. To that end, I'll just have to trust that the user can work around it.

I guess I can understand that, but there's just so much dumb shit with this program. Like for example, if you shift-tab to go back to a previous field to edit it, in most databases you'd be able to hit the arrow keys to find the character you need to change. Not this program. The arrow key will just work as another tab. Which makes it painful to correct errors because i have to use the mouse. That's as user-unfriendly as possible and it cuts production time.

Except a lot of what I'm going through is already in the system, and the errors are there when we open the records.

Also, it does not process apostrophes. So "John's Steakhouse" becomes "Johns Steakhouse" which looks retarded when we have to print out new labels and send stuff out. (Which happens infrequently, but enough for it to be a peeve of mine.) Try typing an apostrophe and when you enter the record, it disappears. And of course, when we get audited, we get docked for those missing apostrophes, even though we can't help it.

And that's only scratching the surface. I think SE wrote this program.

That is why Excel is the great program ever concieved. With enough knowledge of functions and some vb scripting, yuo can build anything you can imagine.

I love Excel, but sadly, we do not use it. At least not for most of my work. There have been a few times I've used it, but mostly for read-only purposes.

Long pointless story

In a continuation to the "Being hit on by manly women" peeve from last year I present to you the second (and hopefully last) chapter in such an epic, if somewhat controversial story.

So, I had to go visit the place where this manly girl works, and even though I was not expecting meeting her again any time soon I'm afraid my luck and evasion skills aren't that good.

Yada yada* I end up alone with her in an office and being hit on yet again (but from what I'm guessing this time it's about pride rather than actual interest.)

So I -once again- politely tell the girl I'm not interested. Something she interpretes as me just playing hard to get (again?), which makes it necessary for me to firmly comunicate my lack of interest in her.

She is saddened by the news (of course... ) and asks why is that (of course...), so I proceed to give her the nice "It's not you, it's me." speech filled with references to my gaming and internet addictions, my otaku wannabe aspirations and everything that makes me the geeky mexican posting in some obscure FFXI forum in both english and japanese.

But she doesn't buy it. (I know!!)

Even though she has heard my phone's ringtone (P3's Burn my Dread), my radio's tone (Codec of course) and seen my cellphone's wallpaper (the 2k-tan pic that's in my photo album here) she still thinks it's something else. <_<;

So we go through the usual can't be, those aren't good reasons for it, after all she is pretty and can have any guy she wants etc. etc....

So, I must be gay. (OF COURSE!! \(^-^)/ )

To which I (make the mistake of) reply that it is not the case but that if that would make it better for her then it's ok to see it that way.** So she of course keeps pressing on the issue until I have no other choice but to tell her the truth about my dislike for her manliness.

She then drops the sexy/hurt-damsel act and starts going gorilla on me (of course.) By this point I'm already thinking about silly things like: "How would Daring Dashwood escape a situation like this?" But unfortunately I don't have a ghoul partner to rip the girls heart off for me, so I have to settle for the next best thing.

Then I proceed to do my best (and dare I say cutest ever) feminine impersonation I could do. You know, going with the being gay theme. I wont go into details of course, but let's just say by the end of it she had the most disgusted face I've seen in my life.

And before she could say a word I just placed my hand on her shoulder and told her to the ear "Now you know how I feel when I see women acting like men." and then rushed out the door/building like I was running for my life. Of course!

I know it was probably the worst way to handle the situation and probably lost quite a lot of Karma there, but it was too surreal to react.

Not long after my escape I got the call from the guy I was supposed to meet, asking me why I left (I'm sure he knew all about it, the bastard...)

And guess who shows up with the drink? (of course )

** All this while I'm staring at the door repeatedly to see if that bastard I'm waiting for finally shows up. Even though I have the feeling he was laughing his ass off inside the office next door...
