Feba the reason they used a fake IP address is that if they picked one at random (considering their are over a billion IP addresses in use) they may pick one that is a real one

they had to use numbers that weren't possible in three out of four places. There are better ways to handle this! (such as Antitrust, which used local addresses)

Ya and what about that UNIX interface on Jurassic park, that was sooooo fake.

I haven't seen Jurassic park since I was like 8, but IIRC that was one of the aforementioned ones that got it at least close. I can think of quite a few movies that do get it right, or mostly right. It's the ones that get it very wrong that I'm talking about, though.

I liked how, in the aforementioned Transformers, the "hacker" guy's computer was able to render these completely alien symbols. That was pretty badass.

I knew I'd get someone.

That one is real. It is the SGI FSN (3d Filesystem Navigator) that shipped with Irix 5.2. Unfortunatly I can't show a better screenshot as my system is in another country. There have been many (poor) linux clones of it.

The IP address thing is as silly to get irritated over as getting irritated over 555- telephone numbers. They choose unreal numbers for a reason.

Fake IP's are the exact same as using RFC 1918 IP blocks. You're just looking for things to bitch about.

And "better" in this case is completely subjective. From a storyteller's viewpoint, it's irrelevant. The audience should understand that it's not a real IP, or phone number, or whatever. It's not the focus of the story.

A lot of these things are just allegory. I'm sure if I knew shit about medicine or lawyers, there would be plenty in those kinds of shows that would seem stupid, too.

But I don't, so a supposed computer expert not knowing what "download" means still bugs the shit out of me.

Mm. I remember seeing one where the proof hinged on the presence of silica... which is, uh, the second most common molecule on Earth, people! Quartz is made entirely out of silica, and common dirt is mostly quartz dust! Duh! I have to deal with enough computer illiterate morons at work. In my leisure time I just turn off my filters on all that shit and enjoy the program I'm watching. You can go ahead and worry about the fake IP address, I'm going to shut off my brain and watch some middle aged guy get power-bombed on American Gladiators.

Real computers are too boring, it was best in Live Free or Die Hard (Best title ever) when someone hacked the mainframe and stole all the IPs. Apparently street lights have IP addresses.

The one from Jurassic Park was cool too because it looked like microsoft flight sim.

How about Scream? When she goes on the computer and goes to double you double you dot 199 dot com, and then it just shows a big screen saying "What's your emergancy?" and then it has a text box. Funny thing is, it really did summon the police.


I forget if this was Scream 2 or I know what you did last summer, but when she's in the school library and it says "YOU HAVE A NEW INSTANT MESSAGE," and shen she clicks accept the screen goes black and in red text YOU'RE GOING TO DIE.

Halloween 8 had a ton of that "webcam" garbage too. That was the one where they rigged the Myer's house with webcams and did some big internet contest thing about a party in the house live via webcam.
