Although seriously, if you're unable to love someone because of their gender, that's pretty fucking sad.
Unless you're expecting people to use their RL gender in a game, in which case first your Mithra avatar is hella funny, and secondly you have serious problems.

Actually that isn't quite the case. The person I speak of was obsessed with anonymity. You can potificate about "blah blah this is the internet", but when you become friends with someone that long, online or otherwise, that level of anonymity is insulting. And yes I will admit that I did overreact in that situation. As for the inability to love someone because of their gender, this is a key factor be you gay or straight. And, no, I don't expect people to play as the gender with which they entered this world. It's their game and their money, and they can do whatever they want with that. Akashimo hit the nail on the head here. Trust and honesty are crucial in ANY relationship, romantic or otherwise. 'Nuff said.

The fact is people anyone can say anything they want to about themselves, you have to constantly be vigilent out here in cyberspace. The fact is having a relationship face to face gives more trust, you can get an idea of a person better via their actions, body language etc. you could get on with someone like a house on fire in an internet chat room or on a forum, but when you meet face to face it could be the total opposite.
About the possiblity of a guy, this picture I will post under spoiler, please don't open if you are easily shocked, but it kind of explains the whole thing, its not a joke as such it prooves the point.

And unless they specifically said they were female, it's not dishonesty. And why the fuck should someone tell you about how they are in real life in a game? They're playing it for fun, not relationships. If you fell in love with something that's not real, it's your own fault. If you're expecting someone to give up their fun and privacy in a game just because you happen to know them for a time, you should remember what it is you are doing.

But when you pick a gender of your character/avatar, more than likely it is assumed by both sides you're saying your a chick in real life. If they were honest, they flat out say they're not and it would ended there. Feba, i ask you, have you ever enter ackward situations from internet romances? Its fickle, and very emotionally draining when you found out you've been either used and/or lied to. Most people don't have a means to hang with outers in real life or to act with people in social situations. I know, because I'm one of those. The internet and any form of people gathering on it alows us to break the distance, and as such, except people to be honest. Its called ethics and honor. When you found out you've been lied to by the very foundation of the relationship, it can hurt and it doesn't go away easily, thats why is expect for them to "give up their fun and privacy" if they enter a commitment such as online dating.

Again, if you are expecting someone to represent their real life self in a GAME world which is designed to be NOT REAL and they could possibly be using to GET AWAY from their life and just have some fun you have serious problems, not only with naivety, but also forgetting the entire purpose of mmos.

And honestly, yes. I've met people I thought were female, but not on the basis of their avatars, one of them was a Taru male. Must've been friends for a good month before he mentioned his gender. Did I get pissy and bitch? No, I laughed. In fact, *he* was the one that got upset, because he thought I had been giving him things because of how I thought of him (which I don't do, treating other people differently based on their gender, ESPECIALLY OVER THE INTERNET, is SILLY. In fact, I gave him my slacks because I had gotten +1s, and the poor guy had apparently never heard of +hMP. He loved 'em, btw)

If you start assuming people are what their avatars are like, and forming crushes based on that, here's another clue for you: Ugly people don't make ugly avatars. If you don't want to get hurt, don't go around making crushes on every second Mithra that forms a party with you on the hope that they are female.

The bottom line for me is: Basing your level of attraction to someone on what their character looks like is already a huge mistake. They are not Elvaan or Mithra in real life. They are some variety of Hume, sure, but they still probably don't look much (or likely anything) like their avatar. Especially considering some of the faces and hairstyles SE has provided us with.

So many people (read: idiots) told me how hot I was as a Mithra. Even though I was the most common mithra model out there. You could find a hundred copies of me in any given city, or in most adventuring parties. Telling someone in an online game that they are hot, or pretty, or whatever, is stupid. They don't look like that in real life, and if they did, they would likely be in a cage under scientific scrutiny (hello non-hume races), or they wouldn't be interested in dating your pimply ass.

Well to my fault, I knew exactly what I was getting into when I signed onto the relationship that just ended, though it wasn't intentional to feel the way I felt.

However, I certainly was mislead (perhaps in my own mind?) by some of the spousal shit-talking that went on, on his part, because with some of the things that were said, I was led to believe that the relationship he had with his wife was less worth salvaging than it actually was. And like I said, maybe I read too much into it, but there must have been something inherently wrong if he started straying anyway, right? And you see where I might begin to rationalize what went on ...

I could dwell on this forever, though, not a fat lot of good it will do me. It's over, I need to move on, hopefully I get some sort of closure to settle the whole thing, as I tend to thrive on that, but for now I'm just left to kind of wonder, "WTF?" and just deal with the pain of losing someone I cared about.
