So far I've been handed a task that I don't know how to do. Emailed tech support and at least got a general sense of what I needed to do. In the process of testing out some changes on a practice site, I manage to run into more and more headaches as I now have to recreate the environment of the real site in order to practice making changes on the real thing. The more I try to tweak the practice site the more things start going wrong with it. It has become an avalanche of shit not working, all in an effort to practice fixing something on the main site. So now I have a half broken practice site and no progress on the main site.

Reading the news online like I do every morning when I get to work and came across this.

Rosa's Law Asks Senate to Kill Slur "Mentally Retarded"

While certainly a noble cause, I'm reminded of how it really isn't going to work. Even the article addresses this later on when it mentions that if "retarded" was banned, kid will just make a mockery of the new word. I mean, even calling somebody "special" is rarely a good thing these days. Even "idiot" used to refer to mental retardation. And now people use it all the time these days, not knowing that.

I'm not going to be self-righteous here. I do it too. In our linkshell, whenever we go on Limbus runs with more than one party, it isn't unusual for us to refer to the smaller party, or the party with less mages, or the party with no Bard as the "short bus party".

Upgrade to Fedora 12 on my work machine yesterday and immediately new changes in the kernel tell me I have failing memory, so yank that out and now have 1Gb while I wait for a replacement kit to arrive and while working with that I find that Fedora 12 doesn't like my Xorg config and X hangs for a few moments every few seconds. It doesn't look like much work is going to get done today.

This is retarded. Let's take all the effort we are putting into changing a phrase "mentally retarded" and let's put that energy towards something that really matters. If this is the worst this we have to worry about in society, we are doing pretty damn good.

I agree it is pretty retarded. The funny thing is that "retarded" itself was a euphemism. "Idiot" used to be used to describe somebody of profoundly lower IQ. Today, people use "idiot" all the time to mean stupid things. Clearly, jumping from word to word to be more sensitive did not work as intended.

While it personally doesn't bother me, people use the word ghey now to describe something that's dumb or stupid. I even catch myself doing it all the time..... cuz dude... some stuff is just GhEy >.< xD

How in the hell did we come up with this word as a slang.... it's that and "i no rite?" And how come when we're telling someone about what we said to someone else we say such as "SO I TALKED TO THIS DUDE RITE? AND IM LIKE 'YAH UR GHEY' AND HE'S LIKE 'OMG NO WEY' AND I'M LIKE 'TOTALLY' AND HE'S LIKE 'I NO RITE?'"

How does "I'm like" transfer to "I said"?

LMAO that sounds just like those commercials. But what do you mean "now"? People have been using "ghey" to describe stupid since at least 1998, back when I was in school.

In a place of employment now, especially since those commercials came out, you could possibly get in trouble for saying that out loud. If you offend the wrong person that'll be all she wrote for your job.

Those who read the "Halloween" thread know that I and most of my coworkers were Star Trek Crew Members. So I walk into the credit union with my costume still on and I sign in and the teller says "Man you like Star Wars (Yes he said WARS!) and stuff like that?" I replied "Its Star Trek, there is a difference, but yeah I do." to which he replied "Yeah...well all that stuff is ghey." I swear I almost went Wanda Sykes commercial on him -_-! Mind you, while we were talking he used the "That's Ghey" phrase at least 7 times while I was there.
