Boo, I can't view that pic...I am oh-so deathly bored at work at the moment. I've actually accomplished a surprising amount work-wise in the last two days, but I can't really keep focused on it for more than 10 minutes at a time today.
I really want to make some more sprite GIFs, especially since those kill hours easily, but I'm blanking on topics/punchlines at the moment. Anyone got any FFXI-related topic ideas they could toss out?

Yes, a lot of programmers and computer enthusiasts or their families like to believe they have aspergers because it gets them off the hook of trying to be nice people and it fits in so well with the current "It's not my fault" mentality.

There are a few people with level heads there, but everyone there who says "I think I have Asperger's" has no idea what they're talking about.

The traits of Asperger's make this very easy for your stereotypical computer enthusiast:

qualitative impairment in social interaction
restricted, repetitive and stereotyped behaviors and interests
no significant delay in language development
no significant delay in cognitive development, self-help skills or adaptive behaviors (other than social interaction)

There is actually one other point that is always left out in the family or self diagnosis of Asperger's. "Significant impairment in important areas of functioning." Asperger's is a debilitating disorder for those that genuinely have it. There is little that separates them from those that are called "high-functioning autistics."

Those that like to walk around and say "I think I have Asperger's" like its some badge of honour, don't. They're just assholes that can't be bothered to learn how to deal with other people.

I have a history of mental problems. It's not something myself or my family takes lightly, and it's not an excuse.

It's never an excuse-- I never want to go back to taking pills, so I'm not going to blame what I do on some condition. It can be an explanation, but the blame is still solely on myself.

Now, you can make assumptions about most people if you want, but know who you're talking about. I never said I had it (honestly, I think I don't. I might have something similar, but I was notably late in speaking, among other things that don't match), just that people around me think that I do.

Satoshi Tajiri was thought to have Asperger's, but his was the brain behind one of the greatest game franchises ever. As Feba said, a condition doesn't make a person: a person makes a person.

As for myself, I was told I had Hyperlexia, and I have had absolutely no reason to think otherwise. Do I go boasting about it to everyone? Heck, no. Not only is it not that big a deal, it's also taking pride in something that's not that big a deal, and I'm pretty sure my position on all "forms" of pride have been well established on these boards (though, to me, all pride's just pride, plain and simple).
