The dogs seemed to know their food was deadly. "Some dogs were stealing food from the kitchen counter," Center said. "Others just stopped eating the food and begged for treats. Unfortunately, some owners used gravy and other mixers to entice their dogs to consume what they thought was safe, quality dog food."
Ya it sounds sad now that you know that the dog food was tainted, but at the time it probably seemed like just another day where the dog is in a mood and doesn't want to eat it's food.
It's also worth noting that the recall does not effect every lot of every brand. So if you're in an area where your choices are limited you can get details on exactly what is recalled and safely choose cans not from that lot. Also, most effected brands and cans should have already been pulled from store shelves.

right, I had my dad call me Saturday morning and have me check, done lots of reading up on it. We are going to stop feeding Austin canned food for a little while just to be safe, and stick with the dry food
My wife would be devastated if anything happened to our little pug.
The MSNBC link is for an older recall which was on dry food. That recall was for aflatoxins which affected the liver.
About 3 years ago, our dog lost her appetite and was losing weight rapidly. We took her to the vet's immediately. It turned out her liver was failing. She's now been on a special diet with medication and while I wouldn't say she's "healthy", she's at least happy and as energetic as she can be for an 11 year old German Shepherd.
Although we weren't feeding her dry food which was ever recalled, it makes me wonder if she was affected by it. The source of her liver cirrhosis has always been a mystery.
Edit: the link I'm referring to is one in Lambeaus' post
