I've been around 1337 since it's inception waaaaaaayyy back in the day where it was used to circumvent BBS foul language filters (it's intended purpose) through the warez thing and online games, but one thing I've run across several times is the following construction which I do not understand:

It comes from people making fun of those who get too excited and their finger falls off the shift key when they are typing exclamation points.

I believe it's more accurately based on "Arfenspeak", based on the text of the intentionally-horrible flash series (and old computer freebie game) "ARFENHOUSE!!!11".
