Yes, been posted many times before do a search for DDoS attacks and you should come up with the threads about it. hackers enlisting agents (the bot machines) to carry out a DDoS attack is the basic design of how it works, FFXIs website even stated of being attacked by DDoS attacks.

So simply yes what that article says is something of the jist of what happens to FFXI from time to time. Do a search for the DDoS attacks a lot of info already has been posted of how the hackers enlist their agents and even a few things to check your system to make sure you are not an agent.
