Is a new 'Police Academy' a good idea? | 24 Frames | Los Angeles Times
Sort of old news, actually, but New Line seems to have been looking into the possibility for a while. While interest dropped off after the fourth movie, it was really the seventh movie where it just kinda fell apart. They were able to keep the same level of humor and pacing through to PA6, at least.
I guess I just wonder if this sort of comedy can even work today like it consistently did in the 80s.
I'd hope for a new cast with a similar balance to the 80s flicks, though. Part of the problem with Mission to Moscow was not only that the premise of the plot was dated for its time (Game Boy and Tetris were five years old by then, to say nothing of the end of the cold war being a couple more), but important characters like Hightower and Hooks weren't there to keep the flavor of the franchise going. Even Jones, while there, was toned down horribly - it was like the director didn't even know what to do with Micheal Winslow.
Just for the love of all things hold, don't let the Waynes Brothers direct it. That said, if they got Simon Pegg, I could actually see him bringing all the right sensibilities to it.
