The Hork-Bajir Chronicles - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Is what i meant, its an off shoot from the series. I recently found my old books and re-read this book. After seeing Avatar I realized it seemed a bit familiar

i saw the movie twice.. night it came out i took the grandkids to see it.. the boy had been sayin for weeks i was gonna take him to it.. then the following monday went and saw it again..

heres my opinion with a lil background.. ive been to an actual theater type setting maybe 8 times in 30 some years. i dont like theaters really, having to deal with idiots that leave thier phones on, talk or whatever else they can do annoying.. so i usually wait for it to hit dvd..

i went and saw it twice.. 60 mile drive to a decent theater.. saw it twice..

although during the movie i did lean ove to a friend who plays ff and say "you think they played ff much?", i saw more similarities with the na'vi and mithra (granted taller) and then when they hit the floating mountains.. cop zones.. they lived in a big tree (windhurst)..

still thought the movie was good though..

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA busted out laughing when I read that! I did the same damn thing with my son! He leaned over and said "What do you think, mithra?" and we giggled. Then when I saw the tree I said "WINDURST!!" and he said "The mana tree from Secret of Mana!" And when they showed the floating islands we both went "OMG COP!!" Then I saw the waterfalls and said "ooooooor SKY!" lol We always find things that remind us of FFXI in things. We always have a little contest. When we leave the house, we harass the first person to bring up the game in any fashion. My son lost this one!

Re: AVATAR (Not to be confused with The Last Airbender)

broke 1 billion in what 17 days in theaters..

im really interested to see what it ends at when it drops out of main stream theaters and hit the matinee shows when the money they track slows down.

course theres still time.. it could move further up the list of money makers..

not gonna go to theaters to see it again.. twice was enough for me lol but cant wait for it to hit dvd..

may actually make me invest in a blu ray player and / or a blu ray drive for the comp.. all the tvs i have are hd.. just like em cause they take up less space so never bothered upgrading to blu ray or hd players since they had that lil war goin on but since now thats over and seems blu ray won.. may have to finally break down and upgrade for it.

but, dont think it will feel the same on a home screen that it felt in the theater.. may just have to finish out my basement and make it one big theater there..

Loved this movie, but has anyone seen the pic of the female Na'vi face with the following quote:

"Pocohantas, in the future in Iraq. I just saved you 11$"

I lol'd hard, as that is such a good 1-liner summary.

Also, Sigourney Weaver made the movie. She did such a great fucking job.

Re: AVATAR (Not to be confused with The Last Airbender)

Saw the movie yesterday. Meant to see it in IMAX. But who'd have thought, 2 weeks after being released, they'd still have full theaters for the IMAX? They told me I probably would have to show up an hour and a half early in order to see the IMAX...so I ended up seeing it in regular 3-D.

It looks amazing, but they could've done well to innovate on the story a bit more too. We've already seen this when it was called Pocahontas and The Last Samurai.

Am I the only person who didn't mind the storyline?

Maybe it's because I didn't know anything going in, but there really wasn't anything wrong with the story. It wasn't any better or worse than any given storyline for the genre, and it worked. It made for a fun experience.
From what I've seen on forums after having seen it, it sounds like a lot of people knew the storyline beforehand and it made a lot of them very bitter about the whole thing.

This storyline has been done before, yes. But you know what? So has just about every other storyline out there.

Sorry, it just bugs me that folks are grumbling about the storyline as though recycled storylines were some new found attrocity unique to this film. Old story, but told in a very compelling manner.

I saw this movie 2x. One time in the IMAX 3D. It was worth it. I wish I went to a REAL IMAX theather, but they were all booked up. I think I might go back to watch it again on a real one. All the others are IMAX experience, but not true IMAX.

I really enjoyed the visuals and the concept of the whole, even if some people thought of it as an rehashed Pocahontas movie.

I didn't say the story was bad. I said they could've innovated on it a bit. You didn't know anything going in? After just seeing 20 minutes of the film, I already know how the rest of it was going to go.

                            - European settlers have trouble settling in the new world because of the noble savages.
                            - One settler finds himself among the noble savages.
                            - Settler learns over time the savages aren't so savage at all.
                            - Settler joins the noble savages to fight against the evil European settlers.

It isn't just Pocahontas. We've seen this story before in films like The Last Samurai too. A lot of people knew the story beforehand because it's an easy story to guess. Because that's just what happens in movies like this...

A lot of other storylines have been done before, but the good movies innovate on them. Or at least have the good sense not to flaunt the fact they're rehashed. All I have to say is that the visuals of Avatar are amazing. The world is well conceived. The Na'vi speaks with Nigerian accents for whatever reason. It's tough to believe Pandora and Na'vi are things that only exist in a computer hard drive. The same ol' clunky James Cameron dialogue is there.

And I really hope this isn't really James Cameron's dream project. The Simpsons did it first.

well, i liked the story line.. liked the movie.. i think its just more of the easily offended people that would prefer to "think" humankind is better than that..

yeah besides ones mentioned here poc/tls there story basis has been done hundreds of times through books/movies/ and so on.

someone more powerful moves into a new area.. starts mining/harvesting what not pushing out the originals with lil thought of them whatsoever..

most of the ones upset or irked by the story lines are ones that typically wish to over look the fact that it just aint the "white man" alone doing this.. take the clear cutting going on right now in south america most being done by part of the residents themselves clear cutting and burning to make more farmland.. in the process lessening the area used by some indigenous tribes still living lives off the land themselves..

not too long ago they had just found one tribe thought to have been extinct for hundreds of years cause no one had seen one in awhile.. till a helicopter flew over and saw a small village of em at which time the scared people started shooting arrows at the helicopter above them.. as the women and children ran.. (yes that was in the news 2-3 years ago).. even though by all accounts they were considered extinct and gone.

people can try to be as politically correct as they want and try to force that opinion or belief on everyone else but the simple fact is.. money/need drives humanity as a whole and if some lil village somewhere is sittin on something a stronger group wants.. somebodies gettin moved.. one way or another..

Oh I was able to see most of it coming a mile away, no argument there. I just happened to not mind because I was having such a good time.
