Actually, he takes off his helmet in F-Zero X for the N64.

That aside, I've read that F-Zero GP Legend and the anime based on it are considered very non-canon because they're off by about 400 years from the usual timeline of the F-Zero games. Wikipedia also claims that many of the characters look significantly different (I mean, Falcon's hair is light brown in the anime. Practically black in F-Zero X.)

The punch is over-the-top (but then again, it IS the Falcon Punch) but I read that the black dude placed a bomb to destroy the world and he was trying to escape. Falcon punched him back into the bomb and they both died. It's not that the Falcon Punch itself created the huge explosion. But even if it had, I wouldn't care, 'cuz it's the FALCON PUNCH.
