  • Tiny Laptops?

Well, I want an *extremely* small laptop, but one with still decent battery life, and preferably at least:

    Microsoft® Windows® XP
    Intel® Pentium®4 processor
    256 MB RAM
NVIDIA® GeForceFX™ series graphics processing unit (AGP) with 64MB of VRAM
    DirectX®8.1 compatible sound card
    60 GB HDD

    Although

    Microsoft® Windows® 98 / 98SE / Me / 2000 / XP
    Intel® Pentium®III 800Mhz or faster processor
    128 MB RAM
NVIDIA® GeForce™ series graphics processing unit with 32MB
    or ATI® RADEON™ 9000 series graphics card
    DirectX®8.1 compatible sound card
    15GB HDD

    Would work as well.

I'd also like to know more about the largest you can get in a 2.5" HDD, I know that 3.5" go up to 750GB, but the highest I saw in an HDD was 80GB..

80GB would be fine though. Anyway, I want a *very* small laptop.

I was looking at Fujitsu P7010, to give you an idea of the size, although that would be too expensive.

Anyone have any recommendations? Preferably under 1000$, although anything under 1500 might work.

Nevermind on the HDD, did more digging and found they go up to 160GB.

That looks nice, but like I said, I don't have 2k to shell out on a laptop.

Your going to pay a premium for a very small laptop. $2000 is probably about the lowest your going to find.
I use a Mac because I'm just better than you are.

I agree with Mhurron, ultra portables command a much higher price than your standard desk/lap variety.

              Re: Tiny Laptops?

I've seen ones for around 1500$, just higher than i'd like to pay.

Really, as long as it can run FFXI and PS-CS2 (bare minimum settings) then I don't really care.

Although a large harddrive is preferred, I can always get a new one later.

Gaming power and lightweight are like oil and watter. There are some notebooks with 14 inch screens that would work. Personally I would look at HP, Toshiba,Acer and Dell......well Dell still sucks. (Toshiba I would consider the best of that list.)

There are a HP,Acer,Asus and a Huge(ly) overpriced Alienware semimodel notebook reviewed and benchmarked.

This is not a Gaming notebook but I am a big clumsy American so I would love to get one of these. Its to bad they dont make a multimedia model.

Personally I like the Toshiba M100 Series plus you can choose the color of the case and its not a dell

                  Re: Tiny Laptops?

you can get some semi-compact lap tops for a good price in the sunday adds with rebates or even go to store a check. Senn some nice 100 gig 1 gig 13 inch screen and a 128 mb graphics card with rebates for about $1200. So just check around for a good deal, if you find one you like keep and eye one it and see if any rebates are on it any time soon. I want a lap top size does not matter for my self but I dont have the money. ><

I don't need a great gaming machine. FFXI really doesn't take much at all if you run it at minimum settings (which I do most of the time anyway, so I can have photoshop or firefox, winamp, whatev' in the background.)

                      Re: Tiny Laptops?

The problem is you are basically asking for something imposable right now. Subnotebooks are made for business and educational use only, so only very basic multimedia performance is needed. ATI and Nvidia northbridges (thats the component intragrated video is part of) use more power and produce more heat then the low end Intel and VIA offerings.(VIA applies to AMD and Via processors notebooks, it is known in the videomarket as S3) With limited size for batteries and cooling low power use is a must.

Your best bet is to try and ask this question on a notebook forum but if there is a notebook that size that offers you the power you want it will be for a serious premium. I even checked dynamism.com for Japanese notebooks (well they do have some very nice 2 pound notebooks) and they didn't have anything that matches your requests unfortunately.

I'm not looking for a gaming machine -_-'

FFXI does not require a gaming machine. Photoshop does not require a gaming machine.

                          Re: Tiny Laptops?

You have to remember something, there are not manny companys makeing these subnotebooks, and there is not much demand for ATI or Nvidia video options. Unless you are willing to use a Intel video option you are stuck with a larger notebook. This notebook style is more popular in japan then the united states.

Averatec is the only sub $1,000 subnotebook's i could find. They are at the bottem of the page

it doesn't have to be an ATi or nVidia, as long as it runs 'XI.
