  • Nvidia 6600 GT 128 AGP

    I'm thinking of investing in a new 3d card to give my compy some hopefully extended life. I don't have a whole lot to spend on, so I'm thinking of picking this little number up and I was wondering what others thought about it. My PC is a Pent 4 2.66gig with 1 gig DDR and the HD i keep all my Games on is a 7200 RPM 40gig. The Nvidia 6600 GT 128 retails at about 189.99 in my nearest compy store and one of the tech reps there said I probably wouldn't go wrong with this.

    I've Been told that I really shouldn't plan on going much Higher than that since, my processor is getting way to old, and with the new PCI express systems out there, It's hard to justify really even putting anymore cash into my PC.

    If you know anything about it or might have this little guy. Can you tell me what you think of it.

    Thanks in advance.

    that's really expensive for the 6600 GT. For that price you can get the 6800/GS with better performance.

    that being said, the 6600GT is a wonderful mainstream card. it'll play most games very well. however, i'm more worried about that tiny HDD you have...

    Thanks Yyg!

      PCI-express is definitelly becoming a point to consider. It's cheaper to make PCI-express due to SLI configs and such. No need for a delecated AGP slot anymore.

      So if you buy a fancy new AGP card, you can't reuse it in the future on new comp/motherboards that only take PCI-express.

      AGP is being phased out, so better to just go with the wave.

        I would say, save what money you can, put off buying a new card, until you can fork over the $400-500 for a new Motherboard, HD, RAM, and GPU. If you only want one GPU -vs- SLI config, I play on one 6800/GS atm [cuz my 2nd is being RMA'ed from Newegg] and it performs beautifully with everything turned max.
        If you want, I can send you some stuff from Newegg.com that I personally used to build my "budget-beast" of a computer. You'd be looking at spending around :
        GPU = $170
        HD = $100
        MB = $130
        RAM = $150

        Plus, by the time you save up the money, they'll more than likely have a discount on the items and you won't have to worry about dated technology unless you want Top of the Line.
        If you already have Optical Drives and a case that you're happy with [and don't forget a GOOD power supply] you can build yourself a great computer for well under $600.

          Not going to happen with $600.

          After shipping and handling, and compatibility, fans, sound card, etc, you're looking at 800->1k for anything with new stuff.

          If you're looking for a revamp system, go for barebone bundle deals, they're cheaper, and easier on the shipping and compatibility.

          PC centric online stores like Tigerdirect usually throws around barebone bundles. If you spot out a deal you like it's usually something like case+power+motherboard+CPU+ ram -rebate or whatever.

          Heck if you're part of the workforce, I would just get a BTO and add a little more expense and let the warranty handle problems. Trying to RMA parts is hard and annoying these days.
