  • Sings of Problems to Come?

    Hello

Lately(as in say maybe 4 to 5 months) my desktop has started acting alittle strange.

Basically everytime the CPU boots up the fan seems to sound especially louder then before and there is some scratching noise or something like that.

I also noticed that when I'm booting up, I don't see the Window's XP screen anymore. What I mean is the loading screen where they have a bar and green vertical lines running left to right in the bar.

Another thing is that the DVD drive seems to be acting slower. I say this because when I'm watching some anime on a burned DVD it stops sometimes (almost as if it were buffering like when you watching something from the internet that's streamed). Also when it runs it has a lound humming noise then stops for a few seconds and then hums again and repeats that the entire time it's reading something of DVDs or CDs (such as when I'm running something off a CD or installing some software).

The most annoying thing of all is when I'm doing ANYTHING on my computer (watching media files, internet browsing,. . . etc) the speakers gives off these really annoying and random beeps.

Are these signs my computer is dying? I really hope not.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Well, it is signs that something might be wrong inside the system. The description is a little hard to tell, but seems like a through test of your system is needed to knock out one by one if it's just normal for the system or a real problem. As a system gets older some things will develop as just normal wear and tear from use, but if it is sounds of scraching or clicking noises those are not good.

Not certain of your level of experience with the PCs so a little worried to suggest anything to try to it physically. For a starter though I would suggest making sure you have a good spyware, malware, and adware program. Also have a virus scan program and run a complete test with Scan Disk, that'll be a decent start at least I think.

yea what macht said. download apps like ms antispyware beta, spybot, adware. update them all. update your antivirus. if you dont have AV, you can get a free antivirus client from AVG. after everything is updated, disconnect your network cable or whatever line that connects you to the internet. now run the scans, fix, delete anything as needed. you need to disconnect yourself from the internet b/c lots of these spyware and malware apps reload themselves if you try to remove them. doing this, you will atleast rule out the possibilty that your computer is affected by these bad apps.

if its an OS issue other than malware, check the event viewer under my computer> manage> event viewer. itll list all errors and warnings that are happening on your system. depending on your computer experience level, you might need help wading through all the benign messages and determine what might be an bad error.

          Other things to do...

Defrag your harddrive, it may be clogged. The strange noises from inside the case may be your hardrive, the defrag shoudl aleret you to any bad sectors on teh rive, if it finds some do scan disk and select full surface scan. The downside is it'll take hours, so one to leave going overngiht or while you are at school/work.

If the fan is getting louder, it may need cleaning, though I would advise you ask someone who knows about PC's to help you before you remove a side and start air dusting.

Out of all you said you have going wrong sounds like a fan is dying which will let your cpu or other devices over heat. check all your fans and blow then out of any dust you find...
