Hey, I took a look at my new p4 chip and heat sink, and it looks like it has a preapplied thermal pad. Now I don't plan on over clocking it, 3ghz is about enough speed as it is; however, I was curious weather I still needed to apply thermal paste. It's a northwood chipset if that makes much of a difference.

If you still have the thermal pad on the bottom of the heatsink there is no need to apply thermal paste. But if you ever do decide to overclock it and may just want an increase in cooling you could peel the pad off the bottom with a razor blade or sand paper. If you use some arctic silver or the like you can reduce this heat of your processor from 4-5 degrees.
