  • New Pentium

Well, I just bought/installed/started playing FFXI today. I just went out and bought a new video card and a new 256 stick of memory. The only requirement I don't meet is the Pentium. I'm currently using a Celeron 700mhz and it's like drag racing with a mini-van. I think I'll go out and buy a Pentium 4 as soon as I get the motivation to do so. Are they hard to install? Am I going to blow up my computer, scorch my eyebrows, light my house on fire, ect.?

Would you believe I'm putting all of these upgrades on a HP Pavilion 6830? Is that dumb or what?

You will probably need to upgrade the motherboard as well, to fit the newer, faster processor.

    Another $150 if you're lucky.

dude, if you want to upgrade, you souldn't have gotten the extra memory... a new prescott p4 + mobo is about 300-350, but it means that the ram must be 400mh (unless you want to drag race in a ferrari with coal) for the newest line of p4, you must have a 865 or higher model mobo. for the older p4 (a 2.2 gh p4+ mobo is about 100 cheaper than a newer p4 with ht, though much less powerful)... your mobo only supports p3 or p3 based celeron, not p4, and your ram is most likely archaic at best, and most likely still in 133mh or 200mh if you are lucky (if you are very lucky, or got it about 2 years ago in a bargin bin, you may find ddr)

as for the case, get a new one if you go for upgrades, dealer cases are normally bad at best (my dell case is so crappy it has only two fans TOTAL, with one belonging to the psu)

unless you have the money, i guess it's best if you stick to pathetic resolution.

yup if you're going to upgrade to pentium 4, you will need new cpu, motherboard and ram. a cheaper upgrade would be getting a Pentium 3 over 1ghz

i would have waited for the new X800 pro... it's cheaper than 9800xt is now and twice as good 9800pro

though that may change (it's supposed to be released at 400, but may be 500 or higher like nvidia card)

Eh, don't get a Prescott. They run hotter, use more power and don't run as fast as the Northwoods at the same clock speed. The pipelines are much longer, meaning that they will get much faster when they get to faster speeds. Prescotts arn't worth it now.

As for the HP computer, you might be able to do it. I had recently done that with an HP comp of mine. THe CPU socket on the other mobo is to the right more than the original, so the drivers have to stick out else they will hit the heatsink. The little pins for the power button and LED's prolly won't be the same. All I was able to get working what the power button. If you get a new mobo, CPU, video card, ect you would also have to get a new power supply. As Doppelganger stated, the RAM speed prolly won't match either. You'll need pc3200 (400 MHz DDR) speed for any newer CPU.
