  • Good Vid card to buy?

Hey all, Im currently using a Geforce4 4200 ti and its just not doing what i want it to so im upgrading, is this card good enough to run on High Res, Reg Texture hack and Weather effects?:

    Leadtek Geforce FX5900XT 128Mb, Leadtek A350 Series, Nvidia FX5900XT, 8x AGP, 128Mb RAM

    Thanks.

Yes, a 5900 "should" run FFXI in extreme conditions (graphically speaking). However, a Ti4200 should be doing well?

Regardless, ive lost all faith in the Fx series, but ive already answered your question.

Your best bet would be an ATI Radeon 9800. Seriously...In all likely hood that FX card won't run a whole lot better than your Ti card. The Radeon 9800 has 8 pixel pipelins compaired to 4 on that FX card.

To answer your question about the 4x vs 8x thing. There's almost no difference. Really.

I hope the 9600 will work just as well. I got mine this morning, a 9600XT 256MB, the 9800 would of been nice but they were so much more.

Also are you sure about the 4x/8x thing. My new card is 8x but i only have a 4x AGP slot. So shouldnt it make it run slower??

It'll run slower...But not much. Probably not a noticeable performance difference from 4 to 8x. In all honesty 8x was more of an advertising gimmick than a REAL improvement.

I suggest you weigh out upgrading your gfx card vs upgrading the rst of your stuff. Ti4200 are great cards and some can overclock like mad. The money you spend to buy a 9800 can be used to upgrade your ram, motherboard and maybe even your processor. That way you'll see an even greater increase in performance.

And the 9800 won't run any better than the FX5900. However, if you were gonna spend all that money on an advanced card, I would go for the 9800 Pro as well, because it will last you a good few years. The Radeons are much more geared towards DirectX9, which is what all of the games are going to be using for quite a while.

Im not really in spending $800 AUD on a Ati card, because they have bad Drivers and there are alot of Glitches in the card as i've heard, so im gonna go with the Nvidia Geforce FX 5900 XT it'll doo what i want it to at a good price.
