Making the Game run Smoother

I'm able to run the game, however even at the default settings, it runs pretty choppy. I ran it in the higher resolution and got pretty similar results only experiencing massive slowdown during sand storms and such. But back to the default setting, the game runs choppy, yet I acheived a 2400 benchmark which should run the game smoothly. I was wondering if there were any tricks I could do to help make the game run smoothly.

This is my system

Toshiba Laptop
2.4 P4
512 mb Ram
Geforce 4 go 420
Running on windows xp

Unfortunately it is a laptop and we know that upgrading isn't a viable option at this point. And I don't really want to sell this unit to get a new one, so any tips would be helpful.

This game runs great on my laptop. Go to Start->Program->POL->FFXI->FFXI Config Make sure that bump and mip mapping are off. Lower all resolutions.

I run the game with low res textures and in 800x600 with no lag. It's not as pretty as my Radeon 9800 on my desktop but I'm not complaining when I get to sit in my recliner in front of my TV drinkin a beer.

adjust in-game fx...

go to config on the second set of menus...
there's a buncha options you can adjust.

turn clipping plane down...
turn shadows off..
turn weather effects off...
turn animation framerate to minimum...

(if there's one i missed..just use common sense)
