  • Digital Path!

I am getting Digital Path from www.DigitalPath.net which is 4X times faster than DSL and is only $19.99 a month. It is the newest thing out, it dosn't require a phone line nor is it satellite or tower based. It's like having your own T-1 line! I suggest all you guys to check it out!!

Hmm. That data transfer limit looks awfully forboding to me. I know for a fact I transfer more than 4 gigabytes of data a month sometimes. I think I'll stick with my trusty DSL line and its unlimited transfer...

4 times faster than what DSL? I could honestly claim that I'm already 4 times faster than DSL, because I have a 3 MBit ADSL connection, and many people only have 768 kBit DSL.

Anyway, using DUMeter (very nice shareware utility), I found that having even faster DSL would not help me at all. In 99 out of 100 cases the transfer speed is limited by the upload speed of the server from which you download stuff. Even big commercial download sites like fileplanet don't provide me with 3 MBit of data transfer speed. Microsoft is one of the few sites that does.

For playing FFXI, transfer speed is totally irrelevant. FFXI is capped at 56K. The only important thing is ping. And I doubt that the wireless solution of Digital Path has a good ping. You might well end up playing FFXI with a ping of over 1000 ms and be a lot more laggy than if you used a V.92 modem.

i don't know, it looks to me like I would blow through that .5GB limit in about a day. They need to get their plans in order, it goes from .5GB to 4GB.....when the average user needs 0.6-0.8
They're just trying to sell u the premier package. If u ask me, it's a cheap, bug-filled, wanna be DSL thing.

        No offense Katsuchiyo

i am actaually a support tech for digitalpath. and i would seriously recomend getting the $34.95 a month plan. plus i would also recmoned going through sunset.net to get it ( better level 1 tech support, plus a comp dialup account for when the service goes down, you also get to talk to a support staff that plays FFXI) what server do you play on? maybe we can go leveling.

Sounds like a good deal for a casual user outside of typical DSL watersheds...
but for someone like me who is, for lack of a better term, a data whore, I'd blow through that transfer limit in no time >.>

yeah, if your an offical leech then this may not be your cup of tea, but an additional gig of bandwith is only $20, so its not that bad. and one plan comes with 4 gigs a month of bandwith.

                WHOA! BE CAREFUL THERE BRO!

Data transfer allowed per month (upload and download combined)
($20 fee for each additional GB)
                .5 GB

That's ONLY 500 MB. Not even a whole CD. On my cable connection I download EASILY 5-10 GBs a WEEK. That's just download and does not include the "Data Transfered" For the online games and IM programs I use. I have a feeling that FFXI eats up more than .5 GB per month.

If I downloaded 40 GB in a month (Totally Do-able I assure you) then that would mean that I pay 19.95 for the access and roughly another $800 dollars in "Additional GB fees"

My bad DJ. I wasn't too sure about the transferring limit. I live in Redding, California So I was checking to see what you guys also thought about this service. For 19.99 a month it would be useful for online gaming like unreal tournament and counterstrike, even though not being able to be a downloading whore. Thanks guys

Roadrunner does not have a transfer limit for every area. I got some friends nearby using Roadrunner and they do actually transfer 5-10gb a week easily. With my upgraded DSL I even transfer a good 5gb a week easily.

I personally could not live with such a low data limit. Even if you can pay $20 for each additional gig. That's just rediculous.

Anyone remember AT&T wireless? Yeah. It only lasted a month in my area. This is the same thing.

The service is good for people who only check mail, but don't like the slowness of 56k or the occasional gamer. And it is extremely ez to download 5-10 gigs a week. I usually do more. If you watch enough fansubs/AMVs and download enough opensource projects, it goes up extremely quickly. I also listen to streaming music at an extremely high quality (256-512) so that is also uncharacteristically ez to download alot after 3-7 hours ever couple of days.

I'll stick with my Cox High Speed. It has the exact same claim and that 4 times faster is compaired to DSL. Basically if I remember right ADSL and Highspeed are pretty much the same as far as transfer rate goes, but the Highspeed connections are capable of being upgraded to a much faster transfer rates and the main advantage is it has greater range (Not a big deal to the user, because it's the transfer rate they really notice especially if they are within range of both services). I personally would love to get an OC12 line, but they are just to expensive to be buying for home use .

The .5 GB deal on there seems scarry to me, my computer idle just doing it's routine tranfers across the internet would blow that .5 GB fast. Not to mention when FFXI does their updates that's a good chunk of the 500 MB gone. I'm regularly recieving over 10 MB a day of just E-mail (Most is damn junk mail I can't seem to get rid of).

The 500 MB limit really does limit you to just E-Mails and Automatic System Updates. An online game would go over the limit fast.

                          EDIT:

Just checked my total amount of data tranfered for the day (since I started up my system), it's already gone past 100 MB just for one day. So I'd hit the monthly limit in just 5 days..

This is without me even playing FFXI for the day yet..
