this might be a dumb question but unfortunately im not a "computer smart" person and i wanted to know if having windows 98 or xp affects benchmark scores. right now i get 2760 on low and 1712 on high and im using 98. i actually have a windows xp in my house on a diff comp but i dont see any reason to installing it for the time being. also if i were to install windows xp would it delete or remove things i have on my comp like folders or songs on my comp or etc or would it just make the system windows xp instead of 98. yea im sure these are dumb questions to some of u but im not really a comp wizz so any help would be appreciated.

if you use win 98, you may have some problems, but if you have win 98se, that should run fine. OS doesn't really matter (unless you want the best score on benches/highest fps in game). i have win xp, and i had to fix up the services so that svchost takes up 15-30mb (depending if i have to print something), else it would be >35mb all the time + the 9-20mb that explorer takes up....
the bottom line is upgrade only if you are using win 98, non-se.

Hmmm... Thanks Doppelganger. I'm about to reformat everything(once I get my case
), and I'm currently running 98(non-se) but there is a Windows XP cd that's been installed on another computer in the house. Should I go for it? What about the service packs? I heard you couldn't install them normally.

If its a cd that came with a new computer, theres a 90% chance that the CD key WONT work on the new computer. (I tried taking cd-keys from a lab at my school, but that didn't work, cause they won't read from my xp cdkey).
Might just be my luck, who knows.-Baka Inu!

98se is good on older comps, but 98 is not good for anything. i have 98 on my other comp, and it need to be rebooted every hour (450mh p2, 384mb sd 100, 100 mh fsb, riva tnt2 16mb w/ tv out). i agree that xp normally takes up a lot of memory, but not much cpu.i have the entire thing down to 30mb ram, with the xp look on. see, xp doesn't have to kill your resources.

Right now I'm using litestep(Win98 shell), and I've got very low memory usage... Are there similar things to do on XP?
Of course, if I actually get XP I'd probably have to use a keygen(Can we say that here
?)... Should I still go for it?
