  • [video card ?] Help me pull a 4000!

okay for starters here's my specs:

    2.0 ghz p4
    1.0 gb ddr 330 ram
    a 60 and a 40 gig hard-drives
    windows xp/home
audigy gamer sound card (doesn't really matter)

    and unfortunatly:
    GeForce FX 5200 128 ddr

Because I upgraded from a geforce 2 pci card i was very satisfied with this video card at the time but when i play games and such i don't really see the SPECTACULAR difference that it makes other than the fact that it plays a little better. My benchmark scores on the old are BARELY 3800 and my scores on the new one in LOW res mode it's a 2400
After doing some intensive research i've learnd that (i'm pretty sure) it's my video card that's dropping my performance so i was considering upgrading to an Ati Radeon 9600, my budget being about $150 tops. I don't want the BEST card out but I at least want a 4000+ on the old and at least a 3500+ on the new benchmarks. I would play FFXI happily if i could pull those and i would feel better about my computer as well.
All of you budget gamer's out there help me out please!! I'd really really appreciate it ^_^.

    Thanks in advance!!

Get the latest drivers for your video card. Also, what's your motherboard, if its a via, get the motherboard 4in1 pack. You could also try direct x 9.0b

Yes, i've done all of these things already infact, when i updated to the latest nvidia drivers my score actually dropped to a 3400 and would absolutly not go any higher. The 4in1 thing came with my system.
I've rolled back to the 4.4.?.? drivers and i get the 3800

All of these scores are on the old bench. my computer doesn't like the new one much. Gives me score like 2400.

you have a pci 5200, but no agp slot? WHY DO YOU WANT TO SPEND $200 ON A CARD THAT YOU CAN"T USE?

to all gamers, IF YOU HAVE A PCI CARD THAT IS NOT PCIEXPRESS, YOU WILL NEVER GET OVER 4000 ON HIGH BENCH, YOUR CARD CANNOT HANDLE IT.
        that will be all:sweat:

Now reading i did kind of forget to mention that i had updated to a new mobo with my 2.0 processor, the geforce 2 had to stay in regardless of my agp slot because i couldn't afford better at the time. The FX is an agp card.

Do they even have PCI versions of the geforce fx anyway?

9600 pro. I'd save up for either a 9700 or a 9800NP or Pro or XT. They have better stuff including 256bit.

yes, there is the fx5200 pci, and i bet that you can find fx5600 somewhere...

why get the 9800tx, when the r420 will come out a month after?

I bought a GeForce 5200FX last week. It is sitting in the car ATM. I will be taking it back and exchanging it for a Raedon 9600 Pro this afternoon (I am willing to spend another $100 but not $200). I will let you know what the new card does for my score. I was getting 2600(low) with:

                P4 2.4GHz @533FSB
                1024 DDR RAM @ 333MHz
                GeForce 5200FX - latest drivers
                DirectX 9.0b

From reading other people's posts I would expect arond 3500(low). I am a little skeptical that the new card is going to improve my benchmark by 1000 but we'll see. If the card does not fix the issue I will give up and run at low resolution. I am done tossing money into my system after this.

I am running a VIA board by ECS (L4VXA2). I can't find a 4 in 1 specific to this board. Is any software specific to the board likely to work?

Never mind... maybe if I'd actually taken the time to research this BEFORE I posted I would have understood... Thanks, I'll give the drivers a shot
