  • Toshiba laptop - too old - play game on it?

Yeah. I have been waiting for this game forever and I finally got my hand on a beta...won't play. The benchmark also...won't play. I have a brand new just-purchased-three-months-ago Toshiba lap top which apparently can't play this game.

Is that typical of lap tops???

    ::sigh:: PS2 version here I....wait.

Is ther ANY possibility that the mass market edition will be dumbed down enough to play on the computers of the world? Seems rather cost ineffective to limit a paid game service to only those with the swankiest systems.

    >_<

I changed the title for you, just so that you don't get the wrong crowd in here haha.

This could very well be a problem with your Toshiba notebook's graphic processor. Toshiba offers multitudes of options of support through their website, so please check them out (don't be afraid to upgrade drivers or utilities for your notebook). Notebooks do, however, get hit with a lousy amount of video memory and as a general rule, the graphics processors are awful. If you have at least 32mb of video memory, you should at least be able to run the benchmark.

Simple, notebooks aren't made for playing games. You should have spent some time getting a desktop, that way it would have cost less and probably would run FFXI.

Although it's true that notebooks were never a gaming solution, recent notebooks show otherwise. Notebooks always came with a much worse cpu and built in video but now you see notebooks with Pentium 4 M's and Nvidia 5600 or 9600. Saw the benchmarks of the 9600, blew my desktop system . Well in most tests at least.

You don't need the latest to be able to play. As long as you have a Radeon 7500 mobility or better you should be able to play at the lowest details. Not sure what you have as you havn't given us the model number of your notebook.

If I recall correctly FFXI requires a graphics chipset with hardware T&L. Your hardware probably doesn't support it unfortunately. I have a classmate who ran into a similar problem this summer trying to run SWG on her Toshiba laptop with a Radeon Mobility 7500.

Radeon Mobility 9000, 9200, 9600 and Geforce 4200 Go, FX 5600 Go, and the 4mx Go chipsets should all be fine. In theory anyway...

Just checked, yeah it seems you need at least a 9000 for a Radeon-based system.

Unfortunately there really isn't a way around this short of getting a new laptop. Though there are a number of nice machines on the market now with Radeon 9200, 9600 or Geforce FX 5600 Go chipsets if you can somehow swing swapping up your system.

Actually I benched pretty well with a radeon 7500 mobility. Not great, but playable. What's the model # of your laptop?

Hi, Everyone. I'm new here and this is my first time posting.

Anyways, I also have a Toshiba laptop (I travel alot for work) and I was wondering if there was anything I could do to help boost my performance a little.

I used to play Everquest with zero graphics problems (unless I went to the Bizarre, but that's another story...)

For the Benchmark, I got a 1200 (ugh) on High Resolution and a

                2400 with Low Resolution

                I have a P4 2ghz
                80 gig hhd
                512mb
                Nvidia Geforce4 420 Go w/ 32MB

I think it's the 32MB that's killing me. It meet system requirement, but a graphics card with 64MB is recommended.

Is there anyway around this? Anyway to boost my graphics card or system performance?

Thanks for reading this. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!!

No, you cannot get a new graphics card for your laptop.(unless they start making external ones...) Anyway the game will run on low rez and It should be at a playable framerate.
