  • I'm having some issues with my computer, and was looking for suggestions.

I dont know what to make out of what's been going on with my computer, but i'll explain what's been happening. To start off, I'll tell you my specs. I run an AMD athloth 1600+ Processor, 256 RAM, Geforce FX5600 Ultra video card, and 80 gigs of hard drive space with plenty to spare. Also, I run 2 operating systems. My 80 gig is particitioned into 2 drives, each 40 gigs, a C and D drives. Windows 98 is on the C drive, and Windows XP is on the D drive.

Lately, I've been having problems in XP, especially my internet explorer has been giving me problems. Everything is just acting real sluggish, it's even taking a while for text to appear in this box as a type in it. If i try to watch a video that's in quick time from IGN or something, my computer sometimes locks the window up, and I have to close it, after locking up for a few minutes. Since yesterday, I've been getting a weird problem, as if my mouse was clicking or right clicking on it's own. Or my browser would like go back, and i didnt hit the back button. Sometimes my mouse would just sit there, and not move for a minute, with no window highlighted. I really dont understand this. I've upgraded my virus protection, and scanned my computer twice, and have found nothing!

The only thing that's unusual that's caught my eye, is in my program files on the D drive, part of windows XP. There is a folder called Xerox and inside that folder is another folder called nwwia. Inside that, there is nothing. When I'm in XP, and try to delete, it wont let me, it says it's being used by another program. When I am in windows 98, I can delete it, however, when I go back on XP, the folder just reappears. Now that is fishy! But my nortan antivirus program still isnt finding anything. I dont understand this, and dont know what I can do to fix it. I'm lost ><

To make this all short, my computer is acting annoying, sluggish, and having issues, and I dont know why.

Edit: By the way, I forgot, another problem I've run into, is my browser's homepage has been changing. Today it didnt do it, but a few times, after I've restarted my computer, my homepage has changed to globalfinder.com, my homepage SHOULD'VE been gamefaqs.com. I am also noticing, some sites that never had pop ups, are getting them.

XP has a scanning program built in and thats why the Xerox one is there. The frontpage folder is for compatibility when uploading files to a "frontpage" website. The \xerox\nwwia folder from the XEROX Corporation is the way the WIA which is offered (the WindowsImage Acquisition) is prepared in order to utilize the correspondence. In addition, because it is the folder which is protected by the system, it is not possible to delete. This is the information given to me by a friend of mine when I asked him about this.... i think this isn't the source of your problems, but i find a way to delete for sure that folder i didn't test it, but some guy in a thread said it worked "Ok, thanks to trusty Google, and 'twister', who lives/posts here: http://www.asendtechnologies.com/vb/...ead.php?t=6868 I have the solution. This will give you added power over your Xtremely Pesky operating system, and I take NO responsibility if you get yourself into a pickle. That said, I did the following and have had NO problems: Do a find on 'sfcfiles'. You need to do the advanced search option, and check 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files', and 'Search sub folders' Results will be sfcfiles.dll, in two places. Change both their names (highlight the file and hit F2) to sfcfilesold.dll. XP will tell you that you are being very very BAD, so tell XP to go piss up a rope...lol........ Restart, and voila, you can delete xerox folder. http://www.wizardscave.com soon to be: http://www.lighthouse57.com...............z "

Hmmm.. ODD... It really does sound like a virus to me though...

go to www.antivirus.com and do an online scan just to be sure

go to windows update and download the newest patches and security updates

go get ad-aware 6.0 and run it, checking for Spyware and data miners

It's odd that your running both windows 98 and XP together, I would think they would not like each other. How long have you been running things like this ?

i dont run em at the same time, it's called a dual boot up. I start up my computer like normal, then I get choice. It asks me if I wanna start up in xp or 98, and I just choose. It's quite ordinary. I've used my computer like this since december.

Edit: I just finished the virus scan from that site, and it didnt find anything either. I dont get it. The only other thing I can think of, there's gotta be some sort of thing installed on my computer, against my will, that might be like an advertisement thing, and brings up pops and such, and maybe that's bogging down my computer (cause i notice the problems the most when i got internet explorer up) How do you get rid of crap like that?

most ad-ware actually has it's own uninstaller, or if you have nortonanitivirus, you can treat adware like a virus . why would you keep both 98 and xp installed? just get rid of 98 and use that disk to store program files, and the other for xp and general files like txt, doc, other non-important files (ones that don't like speed, games like speed, so do video editing software, but office files don't.....). get some more ram (i like saying that over and over again), and update the internet explorer to 6.0 with newest patchs. that took care of my IE problems.
