  • Who's got what? SPECS!!!!!

lol... i know... it's another spec thread... hey... at least i'm fully disclosing that its for bragging rights. hehehe

current system: not really something to brag about now but i assembled it myself

    Athlon 2200+
    Soyo Dragon Platnium kt333
    1024 MB PC2100 (2x 512)
    GeForce 3 w/64 MB
    40 GB Maxtor 7200 RPM ATA133
    80 GB Maxtor 7200 RPM ATA133 (x2)
Kenwood 72x (dis one is SCHWEET!! cause it works)
Verbatim 40x CD-RW (can't burn plain audio too well)
    Toshiba 8x DVD (i think it's 8x)
    18" Mistubishi NX85 LCD

coming system (getting it by next tues): it's braggable but it's coming preassembled .

    P4 2.8 w/HT on 800 MHz FSB
    on a 865PE mobo (with ICH5R)
512 MB PC3200 (not sure if one or two sticks)
    Radeon 9600 PRO w/128 MB
    40 GB HDD 4200 RPM
    24x CD-RW/DVD combo
    16" Sony LCD

can you guess why my coming system is braggable? i gave you one clue... here's another... i'd never buy a pre-assembled desktop.
    Doh! Double OHH!!!

TWO 10000rpm Raptor 36gig in raid0/ for OS and games

      ALL of it watercooled

Just got 8050 on the FFXI bench.

I always build my own comps.

Heres YET another pic of my beauty...

When CPU chips are made at Intel or AMD they are all tested. Some can go faster than others. The fast ones become your 3.2, 3.0 2.8ghz While your slower ones become, 2.6,2.4,2.2ghz and so on. That’s how a CPU gets its clock rating.

Now the CPU's are tested to make sure they are stable and run at decent operating temps. Then they are RATED, LOCKED, and ID’ed. So when you get a 2.8 you can find that its default clock speed is in fact 2.8.

Some times Intel gets an order for 100,000 2.8ghz CPUs. But it only has 90,000 made; they then take 10,000 3.0ghz and ID them to become 2.8s. It is very common, supposedly 1 out 5 CPUs isn’t it’s intended clock speed, rather slightly under clocked. Which is why people are able to achieve HIGH over clocks with say a 2.4. Also CPUs that were rated at lower speed such as the 2.4 can go higher, they just put out a lot more heat.

So "Overclocking" is when you take your 2.8ghz, And either by upping your multiplier, fronside bus, or using a tweaking tool such as Powerstrip. You can force your CPU to run faster, like turbo charging an engine. But at the same time your CPU is also generating more heat the further it's pushed. Limiting your overclocking by how well you can keep it cool. Voltage is also another factor but you shouldn’t care about that right now.

So by sticking a HUGE COPPER heat sink with a loud Tornado fan on your cpu you can get rid of more heat allowing you to overclock it higher (at the cost of hearing) and keep it stable.

But air can only carry so much heat. This is where water cooling comes in. It "hands down" can carry more heat more effectively away from the CPU. Basically, You have a pump, which moves the water, allowing it to move the heat. Tubing carries it to the CPU where a "water block" is attached .The water fill's up in the "water block" taking away the heat from the CPU. It's then carried to the radiator, where most commonly a fan gets rid of the heat, but you could submerge it in a bucket of ice water .

            Class dismissed

aerobahn, how much do you think a 2.5gh p4 can be overclocked if it has a dell case and fan? thinking of upping it to 2.8, but im not sure if it's healthy for me to do that, 90 degree room temp in summer and very poor air circulation due to my comp being under an enclosed desk...

i have an lcd monitor (17" 24 bit 1200x1000 display running at 75 hz and 1024x768 with the pixil response time at 25ms (40 frames per second max), so don't say they are bad, specially if you don't have much room.

well maby 100mhz... but get some more case fans, get better cooling, get a nice heat sink for around 20 $. you could get that up to 3.0 if you water cooled. save for a new video card as well.
