  • ti 4200 up to ti 4600: is it worth the extra cash?

okay i need to update my comp so i can play FFXI and ive been looking at the prices of geforce 4 Ti s and the prices of ti 4600s
and i dont know weather to go with the 4200 which is nicly priced (for me) or go for one of the better tis like the 4600 (or maybe the 4400). I dont know anybody with any of these cards so i have no idea if it is worth the extra money for the better cards.

at the moment i have no other games in mind (besides GTA3) to use the new card on so it doesn't really bother me weather it can play doom 3 or whatever.

i have seen the thingo that says the comparison of 4200 to the other cards in ffxi in percentage but the difference is like 4% or something small like that.

    my question is:
is the difference between the geforce4 ti4200 and the other ti s in FFXI highly noticable? if so is it worth the extra money?

    thanks in advance

i have the ti 4200 w/ 64mb ddr, and i get about 5100. if you want a more expensive card, get the fx5900 or ati 9800 pro (directx9 optimized). if you want a good budget card, the ti4200 is great.

I have a ASUS GeForce Ti4200 128DDR AGP 8x, it scores very nicely with FFXI and runs smothly on Doom 3 (Alpha) and on GTA : VC. Also if you get a good heatsink and fan you can overclock to a 4600 with no problem :D hoped this helped.

IMO the 4600 is not worth the extra cost. You can get a 4200, a better heatsink and ramsinks and overclock it to 4600 speeds or higher. All for less that what a 4600 would cost you. If you don't overclock, it's still very good for the price.

How about some system specs??? Game preformence is not limited to what graphics card you have. I for one think that the TI's are dead unless you aready have one. Just check out a thread made by Ockman, he bought a 5600 which is currently priced at $130.00 it made all the difference for him. But from what I understand the TI4600's are currently $168.00???? OMG just get a 5600 or a 9600pro. They are better equiped and a smarter buy. remember to post your system specs that will help alot.

and runs smothly on Doom 3 (Alpha)

...I never saw such crap, the doom3 alpha runs fine? Your not suggesting that you can Play doom 3 on a TI4600?? Maby you cloud get 20 frames if you turned off polygons and turned on 32bit stick figure mode. Make sure you have no paint on the walls and grass is a 100% is a nono. the alpa used the toned down 16 bit NV path which isnt 100% true calculations. alot of it's calculatinons are "fuged" just for system testing, that why its called an alpha.

            my specs:

            motherboard: ASUS P4S533-MX
            Processor: Pentium 4 1.9 ghz
            Memory: 128mb (i think) DDR

ive been looking at some review of the different ti cards and i dont know what brand would be best but ive heard the best are MSI and ASUS. what do u guys have and what benchmarks did ya get (and post comp specs)

              water cooled (2 BIX,dannermag 350gph,cascade,1/2id tygon tubing)

Just ran the bench mark again 8086

              dont settel for a ti4xxx

get a 9600pro, they overclock like nothing. Or get a gfx 5600 if you love nVidia.

what about the geforce 4 ti4800 SE?
i can get an ASUS one of those for about $50 AUD more than an ASUS ti4200

the ti4200 card has a tanky looking cooling system but the ti4800 SE has a less impressive looking cooling system. the ti4200 card LOOKS like a better quality card from the pictures ive seen but is this really true?

go find the prices of your TI4800se and your ti4200. Then post the prices of the ATI 9600pro.

You will then get your answer.

I use a ASUS TI 4800SE and it is a very good card it works really well and the graphics are great!! I think its a great card and I also think the graphics look better then the TI4200 my friend has so I would say its a better card!!

Just what I think others may not think the same.

the best stock base stats for price is the gf4 ti4200 by far. it is only about 5-10% less powerful than ti4600 with 128mb ddr (at least the old 64mb ddr 4x agp ti4200 is). the best card for overclocking with out modifying the card is the radeon 9800pro (i know that nvidia cards aren't too good in oc, unless you get upgrades).

as for ti4600 being more expensive, it is in smaller quantities and is actually faster than the 5600. the only big advantage to the fx card is dx9 optimization.

dx9.0 opitmization? LOL here look at this

                        http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...threadid=17823

this is strait from one of the core nvidia fan based websites.

Its PROVEN that they do not have a dx9.0 capable card. its just a dx8.0 card in a dx9.0 wrapper...

as always buy the 9600 pro for the price value... the 9800pro for a new girl friend

all nvidia cards are "compatible" to dx9 with the detanator fx 45.23 driver. i have my crappy ti4200 (now worth $50-70, but i still get 5100 on bench with all at stock speeds), and i have the dx9 sdk for c++ and VB6.0.NET and dx9.0b as my dx9 (most of the games i use have open_gl so i use that instead for better looking graphics).

as for the new girlfiend with 9800pro, only a digital girl would love that, all the girls i know are technophobic when it comes to actual computer info, though they know apps like word and AIM.

when i mean capable i mean"sure they can run the game".

but my grandma on LSD with 2 broken legs blind folded and 10 hippos pulling at her teeth while going the opposite direction can still run faster.

does your gandma even have teeth?

i don't really care much for dx9 games at high quality. as long as it can be played, i don't care if i see only a 50% increase in the quality of hl2 compared to hl. a lot of new games use open gl, and nvidia does support ogl 1.3 (+/- .1, don't remember), so i can use that like i do right now. i only care that i can play it without glitches, even if the quality is not better than current games. as long as that happens, and the game doesn't need more than 700k connection (if that connection is more expensive than $50 a month), i'll be happy til my freedom (6 years not including masters)
